The Udvar-Hazy centre at Dulles Airport, Washington DC is the “displayable storage” facility of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The downtown museum reopens this autumn (fall) after a massive refurbishment.
Thanks Iain, Another stunning collection of shots and the subject matter is superb. Nice to see the P-61, plus all the German and Japanese types. I recognise the B-26 in the restoration area, some fifty years ago I built a model of that, as produced by Revell. Sadly that and many others were disposed of prior to a house move. Thanks once again for putting these up.
Excellent images Iain.
I was fortunate enough to visit the UHC in 2018 and the Do Uhu was on display but not assembled, otherwise it looks not much different.
For anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of the 'special relationship' l cannot recommend too highly the book 'Watsons Whizzers'. It tells the story of the race to grab the best of German aerospace technology in the aftermath of WW2.
Sony,
I think you'll find that Heinkel built the '219. One of the first to have a basic ejector seat too!
It shot down five RAF bombers on it's first night sortie, so it was a good job they didn't have too many of them.
It is a really amazing museum, and well worth the effort of getting there from Washington.
