Ramstein September 4th, 1969

Post by Keflavik69 » Thu Apr 21, 2022 7:15 pm

During a spotting-trip in September 1969 I spent a rewarding day at Ramstein. The amount of transient aircraft was high in those days while the based Delta Daggers, Phantoms and T-Birds were also rather active. It was difficult to make a selection of the aircraft photographed that day, that's why it is a longer list than normallly presented. I hope it isn't an overkill and that they are of interest to you.

Not overkill at all, it is amazing the variety of types you could see in just one busy day back then. Would have been more than happy with that selection on a day out. Thanks for posting.

Very nice. I don't remember Phantoms without airbase code letters. What's the story on that?

The programme of wearing base identifier codes started I believe around 1970-71.
For example Alconbury's RF-4Cs wore AR, AS and AT for their three squadrons. After several years to keep the fleet maintenance simplified they just adopted AR.
Hope this helps

Thanks Arnold, as stated, this is not overkill at all, but takes us back to a time when there was a lot of variety to see, even though I was quite young and didn't have a camera. I'm lucky enough to recall seeing the Century fighters and I must admit, morbid as it sounds, I feel like I've died and gone to heaven. Thank you for sharing these with us.

Arnold, you're really spoiling us with this wonderful selection. Every one is a cracker, but of course the Daggers are the best of the bunch! Thanks for posting.

Wow! What a superb selection, and the variety of types is amazing, have to agree, the Dagger’s are my favourites but all are excellent.

Great selection of the century series and a great few others as well, no way is this overkill all superb and fascinating for us who were still at primary school at the time.
Cheers and thanks again Arnold.

Distinctive unit identifiers were introduced in USAFE from January 1970 (81st TFW) to April 1970 (32nd TFS). Strictly speaking they identify the units rather than the base, though many derive from the base name.

My first visit to a base was 9/4/70, so I understand now. Thanks.
