EB-66's at Spangdahlem

Post by Keflavik69 » Sat Apr 09, 2022 8:03 pm

During the open house at Spangdahlem AB on June 15th, 1971, several EB-66's could be photographed from a distance. I hope you like the images.

Looks like Bitburg in the background of the last one.

Keep it up Arnold

Now these are a treat indeed. Not many shots of in-service EB-66s around.

Hope we like them Arnold? - I think their great and thanks as always for sharing these rare images from you're collection.
The 39thTEWS at Spangdahlem operated a mix of about 15 EB-66C/E's from 1969 - 1972. Shots 2 and 3 are EB-66E's.
My memories of seeing these in the UK are limited to a couple of operational appearances at Lakenheath and in the static at the 1970 and '71 Alconbury shows plus Upper Heyford shows 1971 and '72. Following reassignment to the 52nd TFW, which was activated at Spangdahlem on the 31st Dec'71, they were recoded SP.

54-0463, 528 and 539 were no strangers to Spangdahlem having been previously based there as RB-66's with the 10th TRW in the late 50's. In Aug'59 the 10th TRW moved to Alconbury with the 1st and 30th TRS's, both with RB-66B's, while the 19th TRS took its RB-66B's to Bruntingthorpe and the 42nd TRS RB-66C's went to Chelveston. It took a while but I later caught up with all 3.

I've seen a photo of EB-66C 55-0386, coded RC, taken at Spangdahlem shortly after delivery to the 39th TEWS. RC being the unit marking of the 41st TEWS, 355th TFW, based at Takhli RTAFB which inactivated in 1969.

Superb post mate and what a great aircraft . The shot with Bitburg in the background is particularly evocative . And 'as per' Luxto nails the context details . Still drooling :thumb:

Alconbury was the optimum place for seeing the EB66's making weekend visits during 1971/72. The recoding from BV to SP must have taken some time as three were noted at Alconbury over the weekend 5-6/02/72 still coded BV.
