FighterControl

On the 30th of July 1968 I moved to RAF Woodbridge. This base was shared by the 20TFW at Wethersfield and the 81TFW at Bentwaters. So it produced the Phantom, in the higher serial range compared with the Bentwaters based aircraft, and Super Sabres. Unfortunately no visitors were seen during my spell in the approach of Woodbridge.

Thanks Arnold for another selection of shots from your visit many years ago. I didn't see many USAF F-100s and they were mainly Lakenheath based examples that I did see.

Lovely! Just a bit before my time but probably the best era for variety!

Great photos. I visited Woodbridge a few times when I was a kid to see the A10s.

Dear Ranger, thank you for your kind comments. These Phantoms are F-4C's. Kudo's for noticing it, I never did! When you see the pair landing at Bentwaters in my 29/7/1968 posting you see that one has the modificatioin already while the other doesn't. So it is obvious that the modification only took place during that time.

Dear Arnold, first of all, love your pictures from a period I just missed. Did some studying and you are absolutely right they indeed are F4C's, apologies. Never realised the USAF had F4C's flying with noses without the chin sensor. I have no idea why they did this shortly before changing to the F4D. I always thought they started doing this with the introduction of the F4D because they thought they could do without ECM. Later they discovered they couldn't and changed the noses again with chin sensor with modified ECM equipment that did not quite fit in the first place in the chin but with an extra hump under it, it did. This is the F4D nose we know so well as they called it the Herpes nose.
Keep more of those pictures coming from that period . Looking forward.
