Five a day - Part 46

Post by haveblue » Fri Jan 28, 2022 1:38 pm

F104 Friday with a bit of Danish this time. Never saw enough of the RDAF variety at Lossie with visits being reasonably rare in my recollection. Most of these are from one visit and I think they may have been on exchange down south at the time, possibly Coningsby or Coltishall but I can't really remember. Opinion may be divided on this but always loved that weathered matt paint look. You may also spot the MADDLS aircraft carrier landing aid in picture 1 which indicates that RN aircraft would have been based at the time.

Another nice selection, Alan. The weathered look added a bit of character.

I remember seeing a lot of Starfighters at Lossie but not very many Danish ones. I think the Danes got a job lot of green paint and decided to paint EVERYTHING with it until the F-16s came along!

Thanks for sharing these, always loved seeing Starfighters and saw several Danish examples. At least we can visit the Midland Aircraft Museum if we still wish to see one.

Hi Alan :P

Don’t think you’ll find many on here who don’t love the Hooter

They look nearly as tatty as the Danish Super Sabres used to

Thanks for posting :thumb:

What with all these Starfighters currently being posted my cup has truly runneth over. These are from the time before the Danes got the paint job right. Initially used water based NATO green which weathered faster than Katy Price gets through husbands. Finally had to resort to a polyurethane finish which did nt wash away. Loving that penultimate one which really illustrates the problem. Bet the Danish paint shops were always on overtime!

Superb once more Alan, thank you.

A look through some early copies of British Aviation Review throws up a squadron exchange to 29 Squadron at Coningsby which received the following from RDAF/Esk726: F-104Gs R-342, R-343, R-646, R-703 and TF-104G RT-683 which may well be the ones illustrated.

Cheers, Tom

Love these old shots.
Not just for the main subject but what is in the background.
Never did Lossie in the 1980s so I didn't get to see that wonderful line up of Shacks.

Hi Tom G. Thanks very much for info, that sounds very likely to be the occasion.
