Early Model Hercs

Post by dennis273 » Fri Jan 28, 2022 1:36 pm

Didn't see many 130As :)

A couple of NC-130A 55-0022 AFSC-ASD Mildenhall 9th March 1978 quite a catch for me at the time

And of course ...
C-130A 54-1640 105TAS of the Tennessee ANG in the fantastic Herc line up at Greenham Common 23rd June 1979

Very nice, thanks for sharing these. I was at Greenham Common in 1979 too and well remember the C-130 line up, such variety and the only time that the Venezuelan AF attended an IAT.

I think it was there as support for the Venezuelan Canberra B.82 (1233) that was also in the static display, an ex RAF example that had just left Samlesbury after rework.

That was such a good IAT with so many surprises, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the USAF C-130A - what a treat that was and worth the entrance money alone!

Great shots as always Dennis, I love these threads. :thumb:

That NC-130A is a beauty and I remember that Tennessee Air Guard one at Greenham in 1979. I didn't even know there were any with a flat nose until I saw that one!

Another cracking post to exercise the memory cells. I was also at the Greenham '79 IAT to witness that superb C-130 line up. Think that was possibly the only Roman nose C-130 that I saw, certainly the first. As for 55-0022, memories are bitter sweet Seeing it for the first time on the 15th March'78 at Mildenhall I was due to fly on it as a passenger on an air sampling mission scheduled for several hours over the Yeovilton area, the following day. Staying on base overnight I awoke to find several inches of snow had been dumped on the aerodrome overnight which put paid to any flying that day and the mission was scrubbed. Unfortunately for me, another chance to fly on it wasn't possible. Its mission was connected to the Ground Launched Cruise Missile programme. Boffins in the US wanted air samples over countries slated for GLCM deployment - England, Belgium and Italy, so this NC-130A was sent over to get them.

I was at the '79 IAT and well remember that Herc line-up but regrettably missed getting a photo of the ANG example with the original nose. Doh!!!

Nice! I remember 50022. She was there in the Summer of 1978. My mate and I arrived just as she was taxiing out, as I recall. I also remember 41640 as she was also in the line up when I went around Nashville in 1982!
