Mildenhall Air Fete 2000

Post by capercaillie » Fri Nov 19, 2021 10:35 am

Jumping forward to the last but one. I don't think I've ever been so cold at a UK airshow, some very wintry feeling showers cut across from the northeast and I think the temperature dropped to around 3 celsius at one point. Brrrrrrrrrr. the Austrian Draken made a rare UK outing and all the US heavy bomber fleet operated. A rare visitor appeared on arrivals day in the form of a TC-135W which played no part in the show sadly.

Another very nice set on what was at times a very challenging day. Mid afternoon on Saturday there was the mother of all torrential downpours that disrupted the flying which I believe went on until 7pm as a result. Spoiled what would have been an excellent display. Draken & Spirit were the highlights for me; the latter 'Spirit of Alaska' if memory serves.

Another stunning set, Paul

That, and one of the 2 Cottesmore RIATs were the coldest displays I have ever attended :'(

Never spent so much time in Mildenhall’s hangars

Darken was a standout for me too ;)

Thanks for posting :thumb:

This turned out to be the final Air Fete I attended, should have been at 2001 but a family illness meant we couldn't make it, but I've got to say the Weather was dreadful, the Saturday was a little windy with a couple of blustery showers plus there was apparently a thunder storm activity in the area so the B-2 almost couldn't display. The B-2 and F-117 were the highlights plus I had to warn my dad that the B-1B was going to thunder over our car on Sunday. Talking of Sunday the Weather was horrendous which meant we almost didn't get out of the car the whole time. I also enjoyed the Mildenhall based Special Ops display especially when the Mission Impossible Theme was played when they were starting the display. All in all despite the crap Weather I still enjoyed the Air Fete 2000.
