EC30 Mirage F1C with 5Sqdn. Binbrook July 1985
EC30 Mirage F1C with 5Sqdn. Binbrook July 1985
The summer of 1985 had been exceptionally busy with aviation events.
In typical style 5(F) Squadron at RAF Binbrook showed their usual hospitality during my visit on the 17th as they were entertaining 4 x Mirage F.1C's from EC-30 at Reims for some DACT training from 15-19th July, aircraft were 82/30-SB, 101/30-SC, 210/30-SE,and 234/30-SN. Lightnings sent to Reims in the short exchange were XR753/AC, XR754/AE, XR758/AH and XS898/AK.
Hawk T.1A's XX159 and XX324 from 1TWU/234 Sqdn. and XX263 and XX287 from 2TWU/63 Sqdn.were also visiting and involved in the action.
The bases, Chivenor, Brawdy, Binbrook and the aircraft Lightnings, Mirages may all be long gone but some of the Hawks are still in operation.
There was plenty of action during the day so have selected just a few - apologies it's still a large post.
All quiet while the briefing takes place
The two squadrons that comprise the EC1/30 (Escadron de Chasse) have historical badges worn on the fin - a Fox's mask and a Flying Goose
Game on .... Mirages taxi first
Visitor during the week was this MC-130E 40523 over from the 7th SOS at Frankfurt - that certainly rattled the hangars !
THe LTF continued with their training
Return to base and the debrief
The TWU Hawk pilots I think had a 'cunning plan' as the officer on the right was a French Mirage pilot on an exchange posting while the officer on the left, enjoying the laugh, was an Australian Mirage pilot also on exchange. No doubt they had been monitoring all the F.1C pilots R/T during their engagements.
If you got this far thanks for looking

Those were great days, the likes of which we no longer seem to see. Thanks for sharing these shots. Always liked the Mirage F.1 series, some say it was the sexiest looking fighter of all.

Hello Keith, wow! Yet another fantastic post with alot of memory jerkers within. Yes I can remember this one as well and I was back on the trusty Raleigh and upto the crash gate to see these . I can certainly remember the MC-130 as it was the first time I had seen one close up. I also remember it droning low over the folks house on its way in at all hours or so it seemed . Fantastic record of the Mirages as well another of my favourites
As always Keith a brilliant post with excellent content, thank you
Cheers, Glenn

Exceptional set Keith which serves to remind us what a good looking a/c the Mirage F1 was. Also liking those Lightning paired take - offs.

Cheers Patrick, always pleased to get down the 'memory lane' ... still working on the Tardis in the workshop
Thanks to all for the comments.
Pleased that you enjoyed these long gone frames.
I think I had to rob a bank in summer 1985 to pay for all the Kodak product that I was getting through on visits.
Starting with the 36 x A7's into Waddington, NF-5's into Binbrook, Mildenhall Air Fete, Italian Starfighters into Coningsby, Fairford Air Tattoo then straight into this French detachment.
Oh well money well spent I think!

Hi Keith,
What a great set of images capturing a unique period of time in aviation.
I stayed at my Auntie Christine's place in Binbrook (Mount Pleasant) so I didn't have to travel from Grimsby each day.
The Mirage F.1C just looked so right and on take off the noise was deafening.
Great times sadly missed.
All the best
Andy

Fantastic record of very different times at Binbrook.
Wish I could have visited it during it's heyday - must have been superb just to see so many Lightnings in action.

Thanks Andy and Tim, difficult to believe that all that action was 36 years back and the base no more now.
Best regards
