Just a few - from Air Fete '82

Post by F3 » Fri May 28, 2021 8:19 pm

One of the best finds from my ascent to the loft last week was a Mildenhall Air Fete poster from 1982. Having searched for it unsuccessfully for the past 6 mons I was overjoyed at finding it. Adverts for the event were very rare, probably because it was so early in the season and this was the genuine article (probably liberated from a lamp post on the way out). As this was the time I really got to enjoy the Air Fete experience to the full I did not need a better excuse to post a selection of pics. This event was literally a scorcher and I remember arriving home with a bad case of sunburn while some actually experienced sun stroke. The flying was nt bad either, incl the best Vulcan display I ever saw (complete with barrel roll) and the Canadian Starfighter team making its last appearance there. The Static display was the best yet with both the SR-71 and TR-1 on view (the latter for the first time) and a Saudi bound E-3A was parked on the south side. It would be replaced by the one it was relieving on the Sunday. Hard to believe it was 39 yrs ago this w/end! Read those entry prices on the poster and weep for times past.

Excellent, my first Air Fete, thoroughly enjoyable day out. Train to Shippea Hill station for the bus shuttle to the base. There wasn't much around the station area, but there was a pub, which must have closed years ago, certainly not open now and turned into a house.
