A rather forlorn Gannet

Post by johnwickenden » Sat May 22, 2021 8:13 pm

Unfortunately I think this one (XG882) is too far gone for preservation but it would make a lovely addition to the Morayvia collection, what with its local connection. This is stored on the old RAF airfield at Errol between Dundee and Perth.

Its gonna rain, its gonna rain till the levee breaks, a tidal wave of fear and pain washes us away, another fight into the night until nothing else remains, how do we find harbour from the Hurricane?

Actually it's probably restorable, so it would be good if Morayvia could rescue it. Back about 25 years ago, the only time I visited East Fortune, someone there told me that they were interested in acquiring a Gannet for the collection. This particular one I've seen a couple of times from passing trains. Thanks for sharing this and maybe someone will take it on.

Yep! That was the Flambards Theme Park & the a/c in question is XG 831 an ECM.6 variant. I say 'is' because it was donated FOC. to a new worthy home at the Davidstow Airfield & Cornwall at War Museum. It is now repainted/restored & displayed in the confined museum, but at least out of the weather. See this link for pictures outside... https://abpic.co.uk/pictures/code-numbe ... 0xSx%20396 & inside... viewtopic.php?t=195189. Due Credit to original photographers.

Anything is restorable if you have enough money/time/skill.....

I visited this aircraft last November and would agree with John that it is probably beyond redemption. Just moving it without it falling apart would be a major challenge.

I believe that the museum at East Fortune could do a great deal more to save aircraft with a Scottish connection but the will just isn't there. We can't save everything but once each one is gone it's gone for good.

Sadly my garden is too small and the Council would not allow a hangar otherwise I would offer to renovate my Whirlwind last seen at Flixton

What a sorry sight. If I'd known you were going up there John I'd have ordered a couple of crates of Bellhaven.
