RAF Binbrook Open Day 1975
RAF Binbrook Open Day 1975
The RAF Binbrook 1975 Open Day, by comparison to some was a small event with sponsorship coming from within the RAF by the AOC 11 Group. Many aircraft types were noticeably missing but thankfully great support came from the German Air Force providing 7 of the 10 aircraft on the static flight line which also included a Lightning F.6, Chipmunk and a Hunter .
Friday arrivals day was enjoyable and spirits were lifted when a 19 Sqdn. Lightning T4 arrived early. Surprisingly visits of the 19 or 92 Sqdn. Lightnings were quite rare into Binbrook. Unfortunately it had arrived with a pilot to collect one of their squadron's F2A which had been in for some work and both departed in the late afternoon.
43 Sqdn. Phantoms for the flying display only arrived on the Saturday afternoon and departed on Sunday morning.
Regrettably only the four Lightnings parked up on the ORP at the north end of the field were launched for the display. Such a shame as during the following week a 'Diamond 9' formation was noted over Grimsby and by 28th July a flight of 17 ( 4 x 4 + 1) was flying in the area - should have been 18 but one failed on take off.
No doubt the Monday departure of the Germans with their unique formation of RF-4E's, F-104G's and G-91s was the highlight of the show weekend ..... enjoy

Vulcan B.2 XL446 35 Sqdn. makes fly past before landing

Superb - esp that 19 Sqn. T4 and the GAF formation. That's what I call leaving in style - and German organisation for you.

Thanks all for the kind comments. When its been difficult to get out and enjoy aviation so pleased that these memories have been enjoyed by so many.
Must say that I'm enjoying working through these oldies while on 'lockdown'
The mid-70s were great as there seemed to be a show or something happening nearly every week as there were so many operational bases.
Thanks again and stay safe

Hi Keith,
As I have said before the colour rendition from your scans is amazing.
I was at this show (11 yrs old) visiting my Dads sister, Christine, who worked on the base as a cook in the officers mess.
For me it has to be those gorgeous Starfighters and Ginas after the Lightnings of course.
Keep them coming Keith as they are superb.
All the best
Andy
