Worth waiting for esp the Lightning flightline pics. Unfortunately you got the wrong side of Vulcan 607. The port side had the original Falklands missions tally and this was a good opportunity to record it. As I recall it was a very hot day and that lovely blue sky had turned milky by the afternoon presenting challenging lighting conditions for the flying display.

They are nice :) Just one note, the uncoded 5 Sqn jet is XR773 not XR733.

Yes, I was there too. Another epic haul up from London on the motorbike. Great memories, thanks.

Great aircraft, great photos - many thanks for posting them.
I believe that WG760 is actually an English Electric P.1A (not P.1B), also not sure that the P.1A was ever given the name Lightning - the P.1Bs looked much more like the eventual Lightning configuration.
Cheers, TM74

Flight line access, is was different times, arrive early and just walk out like you belong there. If you are rumbled apologies and gracefully leave. Having said that I’ve spent a career in aviation so I know my way around a ramp safely.

Wonderful shots - seeing Tonkas, Jags and Hawks in camo really brings it home how much better they looked in those days, especially with the colourful Squadron markings thrown in. Thanks for sharing.

Great post - and not only for the Lightnings! Just before I started spotting properly. Shame the weather wasn't that good for the '87 farewell show.

Cracking post. Didn't do the show as I was heavily into a loco restoration project at the time and only did shows at Old Warden and Duxford where our group had sales stands. Bad mistake. :(

A great show enhanced by Martin Withers busily telling everybody who listened about the Black Buck mission; rumour had it he was reminded to tone it down the next time he recounted the story.

The flying, and weather, was great too. 11 Lightnings going vertical one after the other, followed by the FG.1 doing the same with the F-15 tagging along behind - the ground shook.

So thats what Binbrook looks like with the sun out? 😀 Fantastic set of photos showing the quality and variety that could be had from the 'good ol' RAF open days. Only went to Binbrook in '87 for the last last show, and it remains the best airshow experience I've ever had and the Lightning forever etched in my memory. Been back several times since to capture as much of the place before it all gets broken up or built on. Thanks for sharing happier times 🙂
