"The Russians are Coming!!"

Post by johnwickenden » Sat Nov 16, 2019 3:44 pm

(I think with this title I could start off a series of thread showing Russian participation at UK airshows...)

Living in the South East doesn't create too much of a buzz for military photography, but occassionally - very occassionally.....something remarkable does happen. This was an example of it.

Back in October 1989, the Helicopter trade exhibition "Helitech" was in its second year (it was a bi-annual show) and, in those days, was held at Redhill Aerodrome. The '89 show saw the first time the Russians chose to exhibit, send a Mil Mi26, Mil Mi171, Kamov Ka32 (all civil registered) and, most remarkably, a Hind F and a Havoc. Below is a picture each of the latter two

Needless to say, they created a fair bit of interest. I remember sitting on the flight deck of the Mi26 and thinking how big the whole thing was !!!

Lovely stuff! hanks for posting them.
The Mil Mi-26 is a big beastie but I was surprised at how cramped the cockpit and cabin of the Mil Mi-24 was.
