NAS North Island, April 1999

Post by alhenderson » Fri Oct 18, 2019 9:18 am

Having spent some time scanning slides from a 1999 trip to the SW US, thought I'd share some. My scanning and processing of slides is not great - I didn't really use slides much, and when I did it was cheapo Jessops film. Plus, back in those days I was more of a number cruncher than a photographer. And to make matters worse I wasn't interested in "old stuff" just the new and shiney things, so I suspect there were a lot of things I ignored that these days I'd kill to have pictures of :grr:

Anyway, a selection of some of the types seen on a lovely sunny spring day in San Diego.

VS-38 "Red Griffins" CAG bird 160605:

Rather less colourful squadron mate 158870, carrying a buddy refuelling pod:

VS-33 "Screwbirds" under tow:

Now onto helicopters. The Seasprites of HSL-84 provided some respite from the ranks of SH-60s on base. 163534 is seen here, now serving with the Polish Navy!

161643 NW/02:

There were also a few venerable Sea Kings around, including a nicely coloured example from HC-11 marked for Commander 3rd Fleet:

HC-85 UH-3H now on display in Hawaii, I believe:

Another HC-85 "Golden Gaters" machine. Look how many "Rescue" arrows are on there!!

HSL-43 "Battle Cats" SH-60 with a smidgen of colour on the tail:

HSL-49 "Scorpions". Grey, grey, grey..

You can have no idea how just much I regret having that attitude back then!

Yep. I've got pages and pages of logbook scribblings with thousands of serials. Somehow scanning and sharing those doesn't have quite the same appeal! Just scanning the end of the trip now and I have one roll of film covering Edwards, Mojave and Point Mugu show!!! Guess it's easy to forget how much film and developing cost..

Hi Al a buddy and myself had a day at North Island - 18.10.1999 and visited nearly all the operational units and we were treated very well
the only ones that did not want to play ball were the ones with the SH2's & H3's but all in all it was a whale of a day and of course pre 9-11 :grr:

you mention that you did not do a lot of photography in those days, I did when I could but don't forget you had to have reels of film which had to go through X-Ray scans at least twice unlike today where you have a smaller lighter card, and because there was more types ect. to choose from in those days you would pick your fave type 1st :thumb:
forewarned is forearmed
