Lossiemouth Air SHow July '68
Probably known as Lossiemouth Navy Day then?
I still had my Brownie and also the Rangefinder camera so the Sea Fury (Colour) is from the Brownie and a scanned diddy size print
It was the days when I wasn't concentrating too much on photos and cropping, so they tend to be full-frame and I should go back and chop the tops and bottoms of!
I tried lightning the shadows but they look as if they were scanned Black & White, not grayscale, there is no detail in the dark shadows in them to bring out.
Unlike Leuchars, it was sunny!!

Great thanks, love the black and white shots.

Brilliant post.
Re: Lossiemouth Air SHow July '68
Impressive set of Naval types esp. the Fulmar. Did nt realise there was one still flying in the 60s.
Re: Lossiemouth Air SHow July '68
I hate going back to look at my older scans!
I commented about there being no detail in the black on some of them
Dug out the negatives and am now having to re-scan them!!!
I've replaced the Hellcat first

Re: Lossiemouth Air SHow July '68
It and the Hellcat were only static here. I certainly saw the Fulmar flying at Leuchars BoB in 1962, but I didn't even have my Brownie then. Fairly sure the Hellcat had been flown around the same time, but it certainly never flew during/after 68

Remember the 68 show at Lossie. The Fulmar used to be the "gate guard" ,other older aircraft types came out from NASU (Naval aircraft storage unit). The based Buccaneers of course had special attention from me having participated in dropping live ordnance previous year on oil spill Torrey Canyon off Cornwall.

Are you sure about the Fulmar on the gate?vulcanxl425 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 12:40 pmRemember the 68 show at Lossie. The Fulmar used to be the "gate guard" ,other older aircraft types came out from NASU (Naval aircraft storage unit). I can't remember it being there but certainly the Hellcat and Sea Fury were.
Mind you it was 50 + years ago so perhaps my memory is not the best of references

Re: Lossiemouth Air SHow July '68
Great set of photo's
My glider recognition ain't up to much either but it could be a Slingsby Skylark ?
N1854 is still in the FAA Museum ,according to them it would of been with Fairey at that time .
The Museums Aircraft - Fairey Fulmar N1854
This aircraft was the first production version and also the first true prototype of the FULMAR. It made its initial flight in January 1940 (the first FULMAR to fly) before going to A&AEE Boscombe Down for flight trials (along with two other early FULMAR aircraft N1855 & N1858). It also took part in deck landing trials on board HMS Illustrious in 1940.
After the war it was retained by the Fairey Aviation Company for use as a communications and transport aircraft and registered G-AIBE on the civil register.
In 1972 it returned to its former code N1854 and was presented to the Fleet Air Arm Museum as the last surviving example of the 600 Fairey Fulmars built.

Can't confirm whether or not the Fulmar was used on gate-guard duty, but it would seem appropriate: a Fulmar at what was then HMS Fulmar.
Hellcat KE209, used by the Station Commander at Fulmar/Lossiemouth during the early 1950s at least, is also on display at the FAAM.

I mentioned the Fulmar being at the Leuchars BoB show in 1962
Neil Aird has a shot of it on this page, in amongst the Javelins, Lightnings, Sabres and some of those little F-5s that someone here likes!

Re: Lossiemouth Air SHow July '68
The glider is a Slingsby Skylark 2. The Fulmar GC RNGSA had one based at Lossiemouth in the late 60's but I do not know if this is their one.
Re: Lossiemouth Air SHow July '68
Wow! This is my favourite post on here for a long while! Amazing selection of aircraft on display and nicely captured. Have to say that one of the Red Arrow Gnats breaking is something else though. Made even more dramatic in the black and white in my opinion.

Re: Lossiemouth Air SHow July '68
My first visit to an active airfield was Lossiemouth, early Spring as we weren't going to get blown off Cairngorm while skiing. XL 390 came off the North Sea to do two or three overshoots before spooling up into the nearest cloud.
Back then the base was host to Gannets, Shackletons and Jaguars. A Netherlands navy Neptune flew over the top; it was almost like a show-day in itself and I was hooked.
