Greenham Common 1974

Post by eLaReF » Wed Sep 11, 2019 12:33 am

Further south again but the year before was Greenham Common 1974. We were due to leave for Arizona in September, so no ideas how I could afford to go to this show, but it’s obvious that I was squirreling film away so not that many shots. The first colour ones appeared, but that may have been half a film left in the camera from elsewhere. I was still using a 40mm Fixed Lens Rank Aldis Rangefinder camera, so the far away shots are my usual ‘grainy’
Just to explain – I took 50x 36 Exp FP4 films to AZ. Those on the tour thought I was crazy. I now know I needed at least 4 times as many!

When this appeared it was supposed to be one of the 193rd SOW’s EC-121S’s but turned out to be a ‘boring’ C-121C – Only boring as far as C-121s go – Connies were never boring.

This wasn’t boring either!!

For sake of completeness, I’ve included a couple of purely civil shots as well as quasi-military civilians. If that’s a problem, I’m sure someone will let me know & I can remove them.

Wow! Even the basic concept of a 'boring C-121' is so alien these days! I am so enjoying your posts of these historic times, which just eluded me at the time.

You certainly tested the limits of that basic camera. Excellent set of a Greenham Common even earlier than my first.

Thanks
I did buy a second hand Miranda SLR with an extra 135mm lens after this show for the AZ trip!
I know inflation has taken its toll - It was £60! (The 2 weeks in AZ/NV/CA was £250!)

Fabulous pics!

Regarding that C-121 - my cousin (sadly RIP) told me about this incident - they were asked to move from where they were standing because a C-121 was to be parked there - cue much excitment! I believe it was bringing in a USAF band from somewhere - Germany maybe?

I didn't get to GC until 1983, but what a show that was! I now live just a couple of miles from GC and regularly cycle up on the old base and on what remains of the runway - my head full of mental images of the aircraft that once flew from there... oh for a time machine!

Thanks for posting.

Great post and so good to see the base in its former glory with the airshows there. Love that KC-97 and those FAA aircraft

Same as Nick - regularly take the dog for a walk up there at the weekend and have the same thoughts. They have done a nice job on the tower and the memorial has also been moved over to near the tower now (been there about 2 weeks but some idiot has already had a go at defacing it!)

New book out in November which will include some very nice 'old' shots from Greenham :ninja: :ninja:

best
