Odds and sods in Slovakia

Post by johnwickenden » Thu Sep 05, 2019 5:10 pm

So, this little lot were not part of any of the museums, sets for which I have already posted. Some were by the roadside, some weren't....

The collection starts in Eastern Slovakia and heads west....

First up is Lisunov Li2 2106, formerly of the Czech AF, but painted up to represent a Soviet example. This can be found in the extreme NE of the country, about 2km inside the Polish Border, near the village of Vyshny Komarnik. It is there as part of a series of memorials commemorating the WWII tank battle of the Dukla Pass

Another ex-Czech Li2...this one is 2107, but (again) painted up in false Soviet colours as 50 White. This Lisunov is in the park in the town of Svidnik, which lies approx 15 miles south of the Polish Border

Svidnik does have an airfield with a single hard runway. The residents are all almost exclusively microlight aircraft, although they do have a rather nice Fishbed on display, this one being a UM model

A few miles further south from Svidnik, approaching Presov, is the village of Podlipiniky (you try saying it after a few beers!). This IL14 makes up the seating area of the local pizzeria

Preserved outside the Aero Club on the far side of Kosice Airport is this Mig21R

Preserved in the childrens playground at Dubnica Airfield is this Mig 15SB

Discretion was the better part of valour here. Shot over the wall from a moving car...Mig 21MF 8209 at Nemcova Barracks

And the last three were taken at the Technical College at the old military base on Trencin Airfield. Delfin 2823

Albatross 4357

and finally, another Delfin, this one is cn 692385

Hope they have been of interest. Next up will be Piestany Museum !
Its gonna rain, its gonna rain till the levee breaks, a tidal wave of fear and pain washes us away, another fight into the night until nothing else remains, how do we find harbour from the Hurricane?

A nice set of shots. Love the Fishbeds, especially the one in camo; like the F-5, it's one of those designs that looks great from any angle. It's surprising to me that a country with such a turbulent history with the Soviet Union, most notably some 50 years ago during the 'Prague Spring' when part of the erstwhile Czechoslovakia, would keep these aircraft in Soviet markings, but perhaps it's down to a lack of funds to bring them back to more suitable colour schemes. That said, at least they live on.
