Leuchars BoB Display '67

Post by eLaReF » Sat Aug 24, 2019 12:04 pm

First time I’ve tried this, so it may all go horribly wrong. Apart from a few Turnhouse Airshows where I didn’t even own a Box-Brownie and my first few at Leuchars, my main airshow attendances with a camera were initially at the RAF Leuchars Battle of Britain displays. It was also my B&W period – I stayed in it for a l-o-n-g time. Then I also only had a 40mm lens on a Rangefinder Camera so flying shots are atrociously grainy, being from mightily cropped negatives.
Leuchars Air Shows were also renowned for being dull & wet or, on the occasional (very) sunny day, you shot into the sun.

So, Leuchars 1967

Excellent shots - first time I've seen a RNorAF C-119; didn't know they'd operated the type!

Absolutely terrific, esp the Lightning line - up + the Dutch Masters (which I never got to see). Also surprisingly good quality.

Lovely stuff! Thanks for posting. I particularly like the Norwegian Boxcar and the Lightning and Provider line-up.

Outstanding stuff with some real gems, who cares about the quality of some of the scans, the subject matter makes up for that.
Cheers.

Thanks guys

In 1964 the excitement was Lightning F3’s arriving and the imminent demise of the Javelins, some of which lasted until the ’65 show
1967 was the recently arrived Lightning F6’s………..
I make no excuses for the next batch which will all start to look the same, but most of them did taxi past and I felt obliged, even in those days of husbanding film, to take the shots……..

There was an F3 amongst them

You are the Man!! I can relate well to those shots because that is not long after I started this Aviation lark :thumb:
the gull grey/white F4C's & RF4C's were regular overshoots at RAF Coltishall, my personal take is this the time when they looked the best
the Lightnings too were also often there and whilst I have a few coloured slides from that era photography then is not like it is today
You have just started my day off well :D

I’ve cleaned up the F3 shot. Got a bit of a shock though. I went to the Leuchars 67 folder in the PC and there were none of the Lightnings pix in it. Might have to download them from Flickr for myself, since I only started keeping negatives in 1968.

These are just the remaining pix in the folder

Last one – It was the days of film. You had no idea this happened until 2 weeks after you got home, or more if you had to save to be able to get films processed. He needs to get removed!

As others have said, terrific shots, from the period just before I started attending Leuchars. It (almost) makes me wish I was just a few years older!
Thanks for posting.

I think many of us have made the 'If Only' remark
If Only I'd gone to Abbotsinch earlier
If Only I'd gone to Donibristle (or even known it existed)
If Only I'd gone to Davis Monthan 4 years earlier
etc.
etc.
and my main gripe
If Only I'd had a DSLR in the 60's!!

Brilliant post certainly some memory s there , being from down south ,Stories of Leuchars B o B shows were legendary while I was a kid.
Obviously to far away for us to travel too we still enjoyed hearing about them .
One question who are the two dodgy looking characters talking to the navy rating beside the Gannet , all looks a little fishy too me.

What a great post. Never went to Leuchars but brought back many memories of other Battle of Britain shows in the 60's. Much preferred the white/grey scheme on the Alconbury RF-4C to the camo they later received and to think, at its peak, Alconbury had 54 of these assigned there. The unit for the C-130E was 347TAS, 516TAW based at Dyess but attached to the 513TAW for its 3 month TDY at Mildenhall. Unit for the C-123 and C-47 was the 7th Air Commando Sqdn at Sembach. Thanks very much for sharing and hopefully its the first of many posts.

I partly posted in response to forever hearing about Binbrook that, in return, I only ever visited once! :P

The 2 dodgy characters might have been selling the 849Sq equivalent to this 8Sq badge? (If there was one)
At a certain Lossie Airshow, if you ignored the stall at the front of the Shackleton and went to its tail, there were two equally dodgy characters selling their alternative squadron badge

The gift that just keeps on giving. Aviation history gold. I do believe there was also a T-shirt with that risque motto but I never discovered where the dodgy characters purveying them lurked.
