More nostalgia...going back much further

Post by johnwickenden » Fri Jun 14, 2019 11:38 am

OK, so I can't actually take credit for these ones. The Kenyan shots were taken by my uncle when he was Chief ATCO at Nairobi Embaksi in the early 60s. The others were taken by my father whilst he was on National Service 1950-52. These shots were taken at RAF Chickerell (near Weymouth) whilst his unit (The Anti Submarine Warfare Development Unit - ASWDU) were on deployment from their joint base at St Mawgan / St Eval !!

ASWDU operated a variety of types (including the Shackleton MR1). They had 3 Bristol Sycamore's - WV781, 782 and 783. WV782 (pictured here, actually crashed at St Austell Speedway in 1952 killing the CO. The other two still survive - WV783 at Hendon and WV781 at Caernarvon (where they have only kept the cockpit, having scrapped everything else (rotten sods)

Hope these are of interest

Nice - never even heard of RAF Chickerell! Shows how many bases we used to have...

Love the Vulcans.
I knew you were old but not that old. 😉😉 Yes I have never heard of that base either.
Cheers
Paul

Actually, perhaps calling it a base is stretching the imagination. It was (and still is I think) part of an army camp with various small arms ranges. The RAF had a small presence there at the time

Aviation history gold and I've also learned of RAF Chickerell. Every day's a school day no matter how old you are.
Can't quite make out the Sqn. badge on the Vulcans which would be of interest.

Think XH481 was almost certainly operated by 101 San at the time (according to the Air Britain monograph XA100-XZ999 it was with them pretty much it's whole career)
