Coronet Gyro RF-4Cs Alconbury 1980
Hi
Next up in the Coronet deployments is the one that was not meant to happen....in the UK anyway These RF4C's from 186 TRG 153 TRS Mississippi ANG based a Key Field MS were supposed to deploy a few weeks earlier to Larissa Greece but they withdrew permission , so they came to Alconbury between 27 September and 11 October . Thank you Greece A quick phone call to the PAO led to us getting access to these on the ramp on 08 October , plus a visiting 26 TRW RF-4C , 68-602 the full deployment of 8 consisted of
66-413 , 66-415 , 66-418 , 66-422 , 66-425 , 66-428 , 66-433 and 66-478
It was nice rfom my point of view as a modeller to see the wraparound scheme and standard Vietnan scheme with grey undersides
Thanks for looking hope they jog a few grey cells
Cheers
Paul

Lovely. You were unfortunate with the light change from the 1st. pic. Interesting, and unique, fin decoration. Those Coronets really were food and drink for spotters back then serving up an annual feast of ANG metal. Happy days.

Thanks Michael
Think thats more to do with my scanning than anything else
Yes happy days indeed , always seemed to be some thing of interest around
Cheers

"A quick call to the PAO".
Ah the days when there was the manpower and the willingness to oblige, rather than the treat everyone with suspicion and people afraid to make their own decisions for fear of criticism, that we have today.
Oh and Phantoms of course.
Another great post, thanks again.

Re: Coronet Gyro RF-4Cs Alconbury 1980
Thanks guys
Yes things certainly were a lot easier back then , I have always been a fan of ... " it does not hurt to ask , the worst that can happen is they say no"...he was surprised that we were interested
Oops !!! Just seeing if anyone was awake.....Im not 66-422 should be there now , thanks for pointing that out
Cheers

Re: Coronet Gyro RF-4Cs Alconbury 1980
Another super post
With the exception of 415 and 428 I saw them as AR , picked up 66-0428 as a Nebraska
Wonder if they later became AR or were originally Alconbury RF-4C

Nice pictures. Thanks for posting, and your other posts also bring back memories of what used to be on the go in the good old days!
Interesting to note in this post that although they are all RF-4Cs, the ZR aircraft has a different antenna fit on the fuselage spine.
I miss the old Phantom, especially the howl and the black smoke! The 26 TRW aircraft used to be quite regular doing overshoots at Lossiemouth, usually on a Saturday afternoon. They used the callsign Utah if I remember correctly.

Thats is a LORAN ( LOng Range Aid to Navigation ) antennae some SP F-4Cs had it too
UTAH certainley was one of their callsigns , I logged them using KODAK , PIROL , SNAP , HARLEY , DERAY , AUDI , ZEROX and SPOOK as well , as you say happy days indeed
Thanks for again to all who have enjoyed these and others , will try to post more shortly
Cheers

Re: Coronet Gyro RF-4Cs Alconbury 1980
They were "AR" before Kentucky.
With the exception of '428, I saw all of them in early 1977 as "AR". I made '428 on this deployment on 05/10/1980.
Regarding the LORAN fit on F-4Ds, it was only the 66-8xxx block that had it.......useful for telling the difference between 66-7711 (before it went to TJ) and 66-8711.
