A few from Fenton & Finningley 1989

Post by F3 » Sun Jan 20, 2019 3:56 pm

Found an old album containing some pics from 30 yrs. ago which altho' not in the best condition maybe of interest. Sad to think that these two great shows were within an hour's drive whereas I now have do the two and a half drive to Cosford to attend an RAF show.

It was the opposite for me , Finningley was probably a four hour drive from down south. I have never even been to Church Fenton so it is good to see some shots.

That Buccaneer pass is definitely nostalgic though.

Hi Mick...As Paddy has already stated and I'll second that viewpoint. I hope you don't mind a couple of extras from Fenton, and will try and look for any more when I get time.... :thumb:

The Wessex from Shawbury, displayed at the same show...I'll search for the correct year and hopefully add it sometime later...

That would have been the only time the Wessex role demo featured which I'm fairly sure was at the final show in '94.

That last photo is very interesting. I'm quite sure that it shows XM479 peeling off wearing the original display scheme that was found on the wings a couple of years ago during repaint at RAF leeming.

That's the 1992 flypast (Tucanos) so the special marked jet would have been either XM424 or XM466

Really interesting. Whilst xm479 was in being prepped for paint, they found this original paint of the display jet and they wondered whether the wing had actually been replaced as there wasn't any photos of 479 in a display scheme.

Just noticed all the interest Pete and ST24.I will search for a shot I got after it landed, to try and confirm numbers on it...JB :thumb:

Bit of a mystery here Pete. The jet which displayed @ Fenton in '93 (actually the last display JP) was XM424 flown by F/L Howard as shown by these 2 pics which I took. XM466 was its twin which was usually the spare. Now, back in '89 there were two similarly painted jets and here are the only pics I have of them. That coded 43 appears to be XM424 but I can't make out the serial on 52. This could well be XM479.

Mick got there before me, but one shot just to confirm it was the one that peeled off from the formation, then to display... :thumb:

1992 was the last display season by RAF operated JPs. The similarly painted '89 jets were XN494/43 and XN497/52, I can't recall similar schemes other than those 2 years..

Thanks for the info. I can't recall any either, which would seem to indicate that XM479 may have rec'd the wing from one of these.
