Red Stars: Preserved in Hanoi
Red Stars: Preserved in Hanoi
Certainly one of the most thought-provoking places i have been to, photographing the remnants of war around Hanoi is quite an experience.
Starting with a couple of aircraft at the 'Cultural Center of Aviation' (Trung Tâm Van Hóa Hàng Không) close to the VPAF transport base of Gia Lam...
Across the Red River and on to the Vietnam Military History Museum, this is located alongside the over-200 year old Flag Tower of Hanoi...
Several Migs were seen in Hanoi with multiple 'kill-marks'. According to the sign "12 pilots flew this fighter in turn and brought down 14 US aircraft"...
This surreal 'sculpture' includes the remains of a Hellcat shot down in 1954. The photobombing butterfly seems so ironic...
Next stop was the B52 Victory Museum. This contains some of the remains of B-52D 56-0608 callsign "Rose 01" which was shot down by SA-2 SAM during the first night of Operation 'Linebacker II' on 18th December 1972. Two of the six crew were killed, with the remaining four POW's released three months later...
Before on to the famous 'B-52 Lake' (Huu Tiep Lake) nearby, which contains more remains of "Rose 01", left exactly where they came down...
Finally on to the main Air Force Museum (Bảo tàng Phòng không - Không Quân)...
A memorable first visit to Vietnam, the city tour was made possible with the invaluable help from experienced tour guide, Ms Nhung.
On departure, one final view of the 'Red Star' Fitters at home...
Final lot to come with some W&R from around Beijing.
Cheers, Kevin

Wow what an amazing place.
I had read about the B-52 lake but not (yet) visited Vietnam - these pics could inspire me to go.
The two fitters (5821 and 5831) look in good condition, they could be new additions?

Done the far East a few times - just a case of prioritizing cash, plus there is a lot of nos in the US still to do. But 'Nam does look good.
Re: Red Stars: Preserved in Hanoi
Great selection of photos. The two Fitters were not present in October 2914.

Very interesting - that B-52 visited Brize Norton in Aug'64.

Thanks for the replies, gents
Just going by the Scramble database, the two Fitters were first noted there in August this year.
As well as the Gia Lam airbase (An-26 & An-2 etc) in Hanoi, also maybe of interest is a former Vietnam Airlines Tu-134 at a Police training facility in the west of the city. Unfortunately the attempts to gain access on the day were not successful. Another reason to return one day!
