25 yr old Mildenhall memories

Post by paddyboy » Sat Nov 26, 2016 7:25 am

Hi Peeps :P

Dragged these old Fujichrome (that accounts for the green tinge) memories out of the archive :)

It was a time when the USAF seemed to be besotted with 'Lizard'

Great stuff

I remember the wild weasel spangs. When they departed together you could guarantee the phantom would be back within 45 minutes whereas the F-16 could stay out for a further 30+ minutes.

The lizard tankers were such a pain to read off.

Love the lizard Galaxy

Imagine how long it must have taken to spray paint that scheme onto those giants :Wow:

Well done Patrick - another excellent post

Always good to see these from Air Fetes way back now (unfortunately) - Lizard camo was great when it first came out and then became abit long in the tooth - I had a crack at a couple of white C-5s last night - will try and get them posted sometime soon

Keep them coming as always mate and hope shoulder is recovering

Was it really 25 years ago when we enjoyed 'Burgers, Bud and Heavy Metal'?

Y-u-u-k-k!! And "shamu" even worse.

The old MAC (and later MATS before that) white scheme was much more elegant - as was the early KC-10 scheme (see above picture) - as befitted these workhorses seen all over the world.

Did F-16s in the lizard camouflage scheme ever make it to Europe? I saw a photo of one in it on pprune earlier and never knew it existed.

Hi Peeps :P

Thanks for peeking and replying

Ah: who can forget the traditional Mildenhall breakfast of a wet cheeseburger (or two) and a freezing cold Bud (or three), straight off the bbq and straight from the ice drums :(

Not to mention that glorious smoke to be breathed in deeply, in between the avgas fumes :Wow:

TARDIS NOW, please, nurse :'(

Cheers :)

Stop it Paddy, driving all with those memories crazy! It might sound crazy, but I CAN sill recall that lovely smell, even today (burgers and jet-fuel!). Burgers, cold beer, and cold-war heavy metal: I feel for those who have less variety of 'frames to look at today. Thanks for posting!!!!

That's a great selection PB, not the best weather in '91 but a fantastic show none the less. :thumb:

A few were painted up in Lizard or "European 1" to give it it's proper parlance when the F-16 was put forward as an A-10 replacement. The A-16 came to nothing and I'm not aware of any camo '16s (that all belonged to the Nellis test wing IIRC) making it over here.

The catering at Mildenhall was always great. Who remembers the " Polish Sausages " .
Always seemed in short supply towards the end of the show!!

Thanks again for replying, guys

I have certainly never seen a Euro1 F16

I have bought loads of different Polish sausages over the years, but NONE of them have ever tasted as good as those at the 'Hall :@

Cheers :)
