In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

It was not as early in the 80's as you may imagine, it was Sunday 22 June 1986. The short log, being Manston, was as follows:-

CCCP08829 Antonov 22A 053483302 Aeroflot
10 y Mil 2 549513115
36 Mil 2 549550016
42 y Mil 2 549637026

They were here for the 5th World Helicopter Championships held at Castle Ashby in Northamptonshire.

thought I recognised them, great info Paul, the memories came flooding back there.

such a pity i wasnt a photographer until 1988 :( those championships at Castle Ashby (and a couple of years later at Wroughton) were great little events.

This was my take on the AN22 at Manston, to take back the Helios. from Castle Ashby. June 1986

Note the large "Royal Air Force" ident , taken off a RAF lorry and stuck on the wheel housing when all closed up for Taxxing.
I often wonder what the ground crew thought when it landed back at base!!!

Didn't one of these "old cocks" make an impromptu landing at the Farnborough show one year? He was delivering a replacement engine for the AN-124 that went canx there, I think by some accounts he ended up being one of the stars of the show
Merry Christmas everyone! :thumb:

I had the absolute joy of seeing and hearing the Ukranian survivor flying over recently on route from Prestwick to Helsinki.......the sound of those Kuznetzovs is a joy to behold both beautiful and downright evil at the same time, :Wow:

Yes it was Farnborough, the fuss was he nearly put it on the grass on finals or something similar.
The an-124 had a compressor surge on brakes off with the inevitable bang id already picked up my Praktica and was legging it for the nearest shelter lol.
