Oddball C130..
Oddball C130..
Going through a few (very) old slides and thought I'd have a go at scanning, took a lot of cleaning up but not too bad, this from Brize Norton I think, early to mid eighties?

If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!
Re: Oddball C130..
Hi Buddy
Saw her flying quite a few times back in the day, but never snapped her
She had a nickname, which eludes me now: sure someone will remember
Thanks

Re: Oddball C130..
I think she was used as an engine test-bed for the A400,but then went the way of most tornados,Rtp,I afraid.
Re: Oddball C130..
Was used for. Meteorological research.

Re: Oddball C130..
It was originally a normal C-130K based at Lyneham, then converted to a W2 at Cambridge for Meteorological research duties, then used as an A400M engine test-bed airframe before being scrapped.

Seen this many a time at Boscombe, think I only see it fly twice, both time at Bedford, Thurleigh? Not sure on the spelling.

Thurleigh sounds right, it was based there for years.bobthehandyman wrote:Seen this many a time at Boscombe, think I only see it fly twice, both time at Bedford, Thurleigh? Not sure on the spelling.

Re: Oddball C130..
Sorry, Mike, but XV208 was never based at Thurleigh.
Its usage was with the Meteorological Research Flight - which was based at Farnborough until that closed to military flying, when it went to Boscombe Down until the disbandment of the MRF in 2001.
Subsequently, as mentioned, it became the engine testbed for the A400 with Marshalls at Cambridge.

It was 'Snoopy'
Although the fuselage has been scrapped I believe the wings went to Austria to replace a set on one of their 130's, so some of her still survives in the air.

That's a great shot of her, I was just looking at the cars in the shot - that's an Austin Maxi on the left and a Ford Fiesta on the right, but what's in the middle?Pune wrote:Thanks for all the info' guys, just what an old image should do, get the memories going, brilliant.
Some sort of Renault estate maybe?

Re: Oddball C130..
Saw her a few times at Machrihanish and had an interesting chat with the guys down the back.Disgrace that she wasn't preserved at Cosford as she would have fitted in nicely with the experimental theme I think.
As an aside, one of her former pilots is building a 1/72 scale model of her. The build is on Britmodeller and is well worth a look.

Thinks it's a Fiat 131 Estate or something like.Mike wrote:That's a great shot of her, I was just looking at the cars in the shot - that's an Austin Maxi on the left and a Ford Fiesta on the right, but what's in the middle?Pune wrote:Thanks for all the info' guys, just what an old image should do, get the memories going, brilliant.
