Exeter Airport 69 - 70

Post by napalm42 » Sun Jan 18, 2015 6:37 pm

Hi All,
My earliest shots from my local airport, when I was a mere schoolboy.
Used to cycle to the airport during PE,under the pretence of `cross country running` :D
My camera was a Zorki 4K rangefinder.

Great colour pictures of the CAACU residents, some of which are familiar from their subsequent existance.

Thanks for posting

What a great post! Certainly a trip down memory lane for me having spent holidays in the West country during my school days. First visit to Exeter airport was in 1961 - had no idea what was there and my log of the visit went missing long ago. Only flying going on was by a few civies then I discovered that No3 CAAU were there and a member of staff offered to show my father and I around a hangar which was crammed with Mosquito's - think there were 8 or 9 in there, even got to sit in the cockpit of one!

Next visit was in Aug'63 - no Mossies noted, think they had gone by then but recorded the following:

Meteor WA593, WD646`R`, WD702`U`and WM270`Y`
Vampire WZ608`54`,WZ620`68`, XD427`23`, XD623`64`, XE860`69`, XE928`76`and XK632`67`

- that airport was certainly well worth a visit!

Wow - what a fantastic post - where have you been hiding all this time?

The Meteor T7 picture - WL349 - features a white farmhouse on a hill in the background - I'm sure this is the same farmhouse that features in the book - Battle Of Britain - then & now.

Do you have any more?

Nice selection of aircraft, but I really like the Wessex :thumb:

Many thanks for sharing, keep them coming please !

Interesting shots, I worked at Exeter airport in 1975 but sadly these had long gone. :(

Superb set, brings back memories,I must dig out all my slides of the Vamps and MeteorTT20,s from the attic. I,ve always lived within a mile of the airport so remember them well.Like the times when they would de-ice the runway by taxying a Vamp along it and sight of the drouges being towed by the TT20,s and then dropped on the airport. New a lot of the pilots and drogue operators , great characters. Also remember the Mossys departing over my primary school in 62/63 in formation to make the film 633 Sqn. I don,t think Treasbeare Farm[the white farmhouse] was used in the film B of B,its still there by the way.

Fantastic

I believe that some of the 3/4 CAACU Vampires ended up in store at Hullavington. I presume that they were eventually scrapped.

The Meteor T.7 is/was at Staverton in its own little "Gate Guard" compound painted up as "Z" of 229OCU. Does anyone know if it is still there??
