RAF Machrihanish - June 1978

Post by Grey Ghost » Tue Jan 13, 2015 10:43 am

Following on from the previous poster, here's some photos taken in June 1978 during Exercise NEJAT 78 involving aircraft from the UK, US, Pakistan, Turkey and Iran (before they became the bad guys). The exercise was for search and rescue capabilities and involved a lot of flying in the Highlands. I was there with the Wessex from RAF Leuchars and we carried out a lot of extra work that the Jolly Greens couldn't do because of their size and downwash. Imagine one of them trying to rescue somebody from the side of Buchaille Etive More or manoeuvring in the hidden valley in Glencoe.

Star of the line up was the Iranian C-130.

The Americans gave a display of A2A with the Herc and Jolly Green. Talking to both crews gave a different interpretation of the exercise, the Herc crew said they were towing the Jolly Green and the Jolly Green crew said they were pushing the Herc.

Enjoy

Another quality post - seems to be the season for it!!

Great shots of the '53 in the wrap around SE Asia Camo and the '53 pushing the C-130 (biased there!)

Would be interested in any more you have - thanks for posting

cheers

Absolute belting post, SEA Jolly, Pakistani and Iranian 130's :'( . I've never heard of this exercise either, just shows what went on back in the day and never got reported because we didn't have the internet :(

Could you see something similar happening nowadays?

Thanks everybody for your kind comments.

Unfortunately, that's all the shots I have from Mac. From memory, I don't think there were any other participants that I didn't photograph.

As an aside, one day we flew down the west coat of the Mull to the lighthouse at the bottom and just short of it came across the wreckage of a Shackleton where the serial number could be read off the underside of the wing. Most of the wreckage was still there in large pieces. Beside it was I believe wreckage of a RAF Neptune and somebody told be that both wrecks are lying on top of a Liberator. Is all this wreckage still there? It is probably in the same general area where the Chinook crashed a few years ago. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me.

Lovely shot of the original 'Brown' Nimrod!

The neptune parts were still there in 1992 (although note that between 82 and 92 someone seems to have pinched the serial)

Shackleton seems to have been cleared up - Neptune might be the same now

Didn't need internet- it was on the STV news at the time. I saw it one evening and managed to get over the next day for a few hours!!!!

Great shots - I only managed to get the PAF and the THK aircraft taxying out .

Cheers
