The Argus certainly brings back memories. While serving at Ballykelly N.I. in 1962 the Canadians were regular visitors with the R4D8 and offered supernumerary crew seats for people going on leave. They landed at Manston. I lived in Hastings at the time and applied for a crew seat. The aircraft was changed to an Argus at the last minute and my duty was to sit by a bubble window as lookout. Wonderful experience for a 17 year old. Posted to Aden January 1963 so never got another trip. Thanks for posting.
Great story   I love all these anecdotes that are coming out , keep them coming please

Cheers

Photographed my first CP-140 two months later at Pt Mugu, the days of the Argus were numbered...
Excellent Keith  , my shots were taken out side in my previous post , was this one of the first years of FIAT :S I remember my membership number being 21 :Wow: How many are they up to now :S , decided not to re-join as I had stated working on a model stand inside , so luckily had good access

Cheers

This has been a tremendous history trip to view such a rare kind.
On the evening of Tuesday 10th May 1977 while sat on the fence at my local Binbrook and waiting for some evening Lightning launches, I made a note of a very rare flypast of an Argus droning along in the quiet evening - about 5 miles to the west and southbound. My very basic Flight3 vhf radio tuned in perfectly to Midland Radar. "BWF09", checked Ottringham abeam Binbrook @ 1930 > Daventry @ 1955 direct Brecon for landing St.Mawgan".
I even phoned St.Mawgan ATC the next morning in the hope that they would confirm its identity, but they advised they couldn't confirm the arrival. :@

If anyone's records can confirm that would just fill a nice gap after 43 years

Hoped I might have been able to help as I lived in Tintagel, North Cornwall at that time and St Mawgan was my local, plus a lot of the inbound traffic passed overhead. Unfortunately for us both, I was travelling back from Uni on that date, and my log actually shows that I called in on the museum at Coventry. Sorry!

Hopefully, gaps like this will be much easier to fill if & when BARG are successful in digitising the remaining back issues of BAR!

Sadly I don't have any photos, but my best day for the Argus was 14th September 1976 when I logged three at St Mawgan: 10734, 10741 and 10742.

I remember seeing my first one back in August 1962 , 20741 , at Northolt , from the old "spotters" enclosure

I love all this ...thanks

Sorry mate - late to the party here - as always!

Superb shot and considering the age of this one the colours are spot on ;) as they are with the others!

Never got a shot of one of these but good to see good old Greenham in the shots - managed FIAT in 1983 and a great weekend (first weekend with an SLR!). Walked the dog up there last week and tried to work out how you would shoot something on finals with all those trees around! :Wow:

Take care and stay safe mate

Darren

The eastern end at Greenham Common was a nightmare from outside the fence, needed to guess the size of the next aircraft to land and pre set your zoom to grab a quick shot as it appeared over the trees and before it went behind the wire fence. No ladders ! At least you could be on the southside, inside you were shooting into the sun. The western end was better as you had a clearer view as the photos from 1981 arrivals show.

Welcome to the party Darren

Greenham was fun from that end as Keith says , got a few nice shots of trees with tails in  but they were a lot smaller back then :S

Have sorted out all my Greenham slides now , just have to re-title them then post them on my Pbase pages , will let you know when its done , sad thing is my 1973 boxes are missing :grr:

Cheers

You can never have too many Arguses, and I managed to catch four of these lovely machines on the ground at Kinloss in September 1978. My 200mm telephoto lens was too long to get them all in so I had to split the view in two pics.
Have you tried stitching them together?

I'm not a fan of letterbox-shaped pictures, so I'm happy enough to have them split into two pics.

I joined a photo club while working away from home for something to do on Wednesday nights
A favourite saying of the judges was 'If it doesn't add to the story, cut it off". So removing acres of grass and blue sky means a lot of mine are letterbox!

Love the cartridge start-up shot. That's another thing of yesteryear, aeroplanes with cartridge start. Something for another thread perhaps......

One of the best photo threads for a while - lovely beast. I only managed two at Greenham Common during IATs. Proper aeroplane. I wonder if the St. Austell Brewery marketing team ventured up to St. Mawgan when they were thinking what to name one of their beers???

Hi Folks

For those who missed the days of the Argus there are still a few around.
10712 Pres CFB Comox.
10717 Pres CFB Greenwood.
10732 Pres CFB Trenton
10739 Pres Summerside PEI.
10742 Pres Rockcliffe ONT.

Plus 10715 supposedly at the WCAM in Winnipeg, but due to closure of the museum it apparently went to Gimli(about 40 miles up road) Didn't see it there this year, might it have been scrapped?
