Whats the story with the Spit Waghorn?

Used as a gunnery target for a Hunter - there is a film showing it.

I found these whilst having a re-organise of my photo files. They were taken at laikipia airfield in kenya whilst on detatchment. Unfortunately I wasn't willing to get any closer to the aircraft as there was a hell of a lot of scrap metal hidden in the grass, as well as venomous snakes (really nasty ones) and there was a leopard loose on the airfield. I don't know any history behind them, so I've posted pics that include serial numbers for those of you that might want to find out more information.

Not forgetting that the Argosy (last used by the A&AEE at Boscombe Down) was badly damaged in a landing accident in October 1984, I seem to recall the engines and other stuff were salvaged for other flyers (in New Zealand IIRC?) and what was left was moved to the dump.

Taken from a Robinson 44, snap shots as I wasn't expecting to fly near enough to get any pics at all.

That FGR2 is even worse condition than the last pictures I saw, the whole nose and cockpit section are gone! Hope the Nimrod and F-4J don't go the same way :(

This one seems to have died (!) rather quietly....

I went round to Old Fen Land at Coningsby the other week and passed the fire dump, complete with the Tin Can Mk5 as a fire trainer....

Don't suppose anyone can get this going again?

I see more not burnt aircraft in this topic :

In the seventies several Canberra's (and later a Lightning in that area) were on death row near the fence at RAFG Bruggen as some of you will know.
First photo WT332 about 1975.
Second photo same spot several years later, WT332 looking different :( .

Reminds me of being on ATC Camp at Laarbruch, there were quite a few Canberras dotted around as decoys. We went off for a walk one evening to have a look at them, the Snowdrops didn't like that, rounded us up, gave us a good talking to and took us back to our billet.

Abandoned – Yes
Burnt – Yes
Forgotten – Once heard – NEVER

I first saw this dump area from Pembroke WV754 on 2/7/64 as we passed overhead on the approach. We had managed a flight Turnhouse-Kinloss and back as ATC cadets

The dates on Flickr are wrong generally – the first pix were taken in 68 I think - Bit work needed there
