RAF Wyton 14 October 1987 – UK Air Defence Exercise

Post by steved » Sat Feb 18, 2017 8:24 am

RAF Wyton was a great place to take photographs, 4 squadrons of very active Canberras, Nimrods and during the annual Air-Defence Exercises, the host to some interesting visitors.

Superb post Steve  Indeed Wyton was a hive of activity with Canberras and the Nimrods. Had more than one conversation with 'Old Bill' along that taxi way
Great memories and thanks for posting

V. lucky to get to see those Mirage IVs which were rare birds indeed. I never did altho' I covered many exercises at different venues. Does appear that with Wyton housing the ECM assets it did get more exotic visitors. Binbrook was my Exercise venue of choice at that time.

Excellent post & great quality scans

Never really was enthralled by the Canberra although seeing those shows me how much I missed in the different configs and colour schemes - all these taken for granted at the time

Loved the massive Mirage IV - great aircraft and can remeber seeing at one of the RIATs for the 1st time - magnificent aircraft!

Great post Steve - keep them coming

It's amazing .... Somebody posts some great exercise images of Mirage 4s in attack config and apart from two people, everyone drones on about bl@@dy Canberras!

Really super post

I used to go to Whyton but didn't take photos - what a prat!

I like the Canberra shots as they are nostalgic to me as I only saw a mirage IV fly very occasionally at French air shows ( JATO assisted!)

What a great set takes me back to my first tour out of training at Wyton...fantastic camp and brilliant time there.

And nice catch on XH131, looks like she has the System 3 IRLS fitted which was quite rare to see.

In fairness, not many people had cameras years ago. Nowadays every enthusiast has a quality DSLR or similar, and every 10 year old has a mobile phone capable of
taking 8 mp images.

But with regards to the photos - excellent set
