Anyone who saw the latest episode of Penelope Keith's Hidden Villages TV series will now know that the North York Moors contains the Birthplace of Aviation @ Brompton by Sawdon, home of sir George Cayley. However back in the day it was also good for spotting low flying military aircraft. On many occasions during the week me and the wife would walk the dog on a ridge north of Helmsley and I would always make sure I had the camera with me to capture any passing a/c. Below are the most successful results of many efforts which do not stand comparison with the quality of today's digital images but I think some of them are interesting and worth sharing. The best day was when I caught 4 Italian Tornados (all unfortunately up - sun) and a playful Army Lynx out of Dishforth which provided me with my own personal short display. Most exotic subject caught tho' was the Kestrel!
I did a walk from West coast to the East coast along Hadrian's wall in 1979, the amount of low level traffic each day (once we got to the East of Carlisle) was probably more than the Mach loop gets in a week !
Thanks for posting your shots, F3.
When i was a kid we used to go to Scarborough quite a bit in the 80's and the amount of traffic i used to see crossing the moors and flying over Scarborough was great, especially the A-10's.
Would always see them diving over the moors there.
