Bentwaters and Woodbridge 70's and 80's.

Post by 32FIS » Sat Aug 15, 2015 6:57 pm

During the 70’s and 80’s I went quite often to RAF Bentwaters and Woodbridge. Here some scans from my slide collection. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Hi
Would like to see more from your collection, as they are interesting as I did a 'base tour walk' (which was fascinating and I recommend anybody to do one) around the former RAF Bentwaters a few weeks back. It would be nice to see photos of the base with the aircraft there.
Thanks for posting

These bring the memories flooding back of action packed weekdays at those bases. Went to Bentwaters on one occasion when an alert was in progress and 15 F-4D's taxied down the runway a few seconds apart in a practice scramble.
The fence walks were another thing I remember, not only for the based aircraft parked near the wire but also for visitors, which were sometimes parked in the woods and required some leg work to see.

Wondering where the Huskie shot was taken? Although Woodbridge had a pair of HH-43's based, 24546 wasn't one of them. as it was assigned to Det.4, 40ARRW at Ramstein in the early '70's. It would be a very rare visitor to the UK indeed, if it really was photographed at Bent/Wood. Great to see though, where ever it was taken! Training call signs I remember were "Hinder", followed by two numbers while actual rescues may have been "Pedro" although I can't recall personally hearing it.
By the end of 1973 all the HH-43's in Europe had been withdrawn from Air Rescue operations.

great post,

cheers,
Graham

Excellent photos, well scanned. The F-4s are wonderful, and most interesting to see the HH-43.

These threads are great! I was too young to remember the F-4s going by the house, but saw the F-111s and A-10s most days.

Thanks for taking the time to post!

Beautiful set Ton  Always loved Bentwaters, although living under the approach to Binbrook it was quite an 'exodus' to get down there.
Got my dad to take me on my first visit on 31st August 1972 while on a family holiday further north on the Norfolk Broads - he enjoyed it too - our first aircraft that day ... R.Neth.AF Beaver S-8 !
My first trip once I got my own car was in 26-27 June 1975 logged 34 x F4Ds and also the arrival of the F16A demonstrator with accompanying RF4C on their European demo sales tour.
Thanks for the brilliant shots, of brilliant aircraft at a brilliant base
