Russians at Cumbernauld

Post by Twinpin » Sat Nov 26, 2011 11:12 pm

Cumbernauld is a pretty small airfield north of Glasgow and isn't a place you would usually find six ex-DOSAAF L-29s. I remember going there to see the six (I think) L-29s which were still in their original colours but were dismantled and mostly lying around outside. I have no idea what happened to these airframes but I doubt that any are flying today. These were taken in July/August 93.

Anyone know where they are now?

Ive got some from December 93 ( I think) with them assembled. Were these just after theyd been delivered?

IIRC they joined the Hawarden collection of Soviet metal, after that I dont know

Here's a bit of info I found:

Seems this one started in Hungarian hands, went to the soviets and then found its way to America:

According to the caption on this fellow's photo, he saw four of them in assembled state in Feb 1994:

It seems they may just have been in transit and storage and possibly delivered in a dismantled state.

Thanks for the info guys. I did hear that one of the aircraft had been rebuilt and flown briefly at Cumbernauld but didn't really believe it. When I had a look around them, they were all a bit bumped and bashed about and there was lots of corrosion on the engines. Even if it had been possible to get one up & running, I don't know where they would find a Kamikaze pilot willing to get it airborne.

Still, even if only one has survived and is flying in the US, that's something.

Stu
Capt Rosenbloom, who brougt them here, "flew" one of them by mistake. According to reports it was a fast-taxy that went wrong and he took off and did a circuit and landed.
I think they were all scrapped but cant confirm.

All of them were in the hangar when i saw them so didn't get any shots of them, so a bit envious of your!!!

They sat outside assembled for a long time. Mainly to the east of the terminal, but they were moved around occasionally as well.

Remember seeing them from an LH B737 going into land at GLA just before Christmas and the whole place covered in snow. Wish i had the camera with me that day!!!
