RAF Leuchars Airshow 2001. Picture heavy.

Post by MikeH » Sun Jan 11, 2026 8:52 pm

Coming as it did a few days after the events of 9/11, the 2001 show was a sombre affair with understandably no US participation. Difficult to appreciate it’s nearly 25 years ago now.
Apologies for the higgledy-piggledy nature of the selection and glaring omissions but I hope these give a flavour of the show:-

Yes you are correct the events of 9/11 took some of the shine off this show but it was a good show non the less, one of the big highlights for me was the arrival of the RAF C-17 for static during the morning, I actually saw it high level over Edinburgh later on in the day - so obviously they were called away due to obvious reasons.. Good show though..

Thanks for sharing these with us, some great shots of a sadly missed show. I ventured up there a few times, although towards the end the participation by various air arms was somewhat reduced.

Brilliant set of images, Leuchars was nearly always a decent show with a good selection of participants.

Again lovely set.

I never ventured south side. Didn't know where to go. I guess you needed very big ladders!

Access to the south side of the runway by the threshold of 27 was included in the Enthusiast Package for arrivals day only. It was decided by the Station Commander to suspend this facility in 2009, due to H&S concerns as practice displays would be overflying the enclosure.
