Tomcat's in the UK

Post by bigcrow » Fri Jan 10, 2025 1:49 pm

More from the Freer archives & here's a selection of Tomcat's that have visited the UK over the years. What a beautiful jet the F-14 was.

Never saw any Tomcats actually fly but on Static at Leuchars 1986 and 1987, Leuchars 1991, IAT Fairford 1993, Mildenhall 1994 can't remember without my logbook if I saw any others though...

Remember that first shot of the VF-142 bird 159449 212/AE turning up at Greenham Common for IAT in 1976. My first Tomcat :Wow: It came direct from the ship with VF-143 159434 100/AE
Got a very similar shot as we all 'hussled' for space on the approach
Great memory and thanks for posting

best regards

The Final Countdown: interesting film, got the DVD but just now haven't got the means to play it.
No idea if the USN has an a/c with 'fire-and-forget' capability at the moment, I've not been keeping myself up to date on these matters.

Thanks for sharing these with us, great shots of another sadly missed type. Also nice to see some colour too. Whilst they usually appeared singly at shows, I do remember attending a show at Yeovilton in the nineties when several ended up in the static park, together with other USN types, something to do with their carrier being stuck in fog I believe.

I remember that Yeovilton show very well and indeed the carrier was fogbound, will now have to dig out some USS America shots.

Tomcats forever! They are still operational in Iran…

I thought the Iranian F-14s were grounded or became inop. when the ayatollahs took control.

Found the link from a previous post a few years back when USS America was in Stokes Bay back in 1991.

Absolutely belting post! Sadly I only ever saw 1 Tomcat (at Boscombe 90) and never did see one fly ☹️ They seemed to cancel at other shows I went to...

Great set of images. Absolutely fantastic colour scheme on that VF-142 jet arriving at Greenham. I was too young to remember it properly but the VF-74 jet that displayed at the 1992 Mildenhall Air Fete put on what my Dad described as the best fighter display he’d ever seen.

There's recent footage around of an Iranian F-14 making an approach onto some island jn the Persian Gulf to display in static park at an international air fair. I think the business fair was for other Gulf states and Iran's pals. A flight of 3 x F4Es also performed several flybys before departing. Believe a Serbian photographer got the invite.

Only time I saw an F-14 fly was at the 1976 IAT at Greenham Common, wish I'd seen more. Also the only time I saw an A-6 display, that display was superb.

Brilliant photos of a brilliant fighter. Thanks for posting them. (No apostrophe in Tomcats though!)

Stunning looking aircraft, a Tomcat after all 😹, it's why I shall always prefer the original Top Gun 😊
