The week they pulled the plug on the Jags

Post by MADWOP » Thu Nov 28, 2024 5:48 pm

My first (and only trip) to the Mach loop 27th April 2007 - just a few days after the MOD with little or no notice pulled the plug on the Jaguars.
At the end of a very long cold and tiring day we were just packing up when we received a call saying "5 Jags had just beat up RAF Valley" and they could be heading our way.
Sure enough after a few minutes they arrived in some style. The first couple went below us and the other three (must have spotted us) headed straight for us. The jetwash from the last one knocked
all three of us over, the photo is a contender for my worst ever category!!
Fortunately they came back around.
A couple of weeks later 6 Squadron's boss Wing Commander John Sullivan and another pilot (whose name escapes me) brought a pair of Jaguars (one single seat and one twin seat) into RAF Valley.
The purpose of the visit was to show the aircraft to some Indian Airforce trainee pilots who were training on the Hawk at Valley, and some of whom would go on to fly the Jaguar with the Indian airforce and then give a lecture on the aircraft in the officers mess. Myself and several others were privileged to be invited to RAF Valley on this occasion to photograph the aircraft taxi in and on the visitors apron and then attend the ensuing lecture.
A fascinating insight into a wonderful aircraft.

Fantastic record of the 'Last Hurrah' of a sadly missed type. There was little to match them down among the weeds. That last one is my fave with the burners twinkling.

Thanks for the kind comments guys.
I was lucky, right time right place for once.
Doubtful I'll ever get up there again, I'm afraid my days of gadding about are just about done.
That's why I love this site so much at least I can keep tabs on whats going on even if I rarely see a fast jet these days.
Now I've figured out how to post multiple images I'll go through my archives and find some images of the Jaguars at
RAF Valley.
Cheers.

Taff,
I have looked at that section, it's fanatstic and brings back many memories.
I intend over the winter collating my own archives and anything I think of use to you
I will certainly contribute. Richard Thomas would be very proud how the VAS Archives section has turned out.
