Lossie 77-78 USAF visitors

Post by toom317 » Sun Sep 01, 2024 11:43 am

USAF visitors I managed to get over the period. The Bronco's were transiting either from or to Europe and N. America. We used to get quite a few of this type of movement at Lossie.

What about those 57FIS Phantoms, nice. You can just make out on the tank on 576 a special marking from their participation in a William Tell exercise.

The A7's were taking part in the Tactical Bombing Competition and they cleaned the board, winning every category in the competition. They put up a 9 ship diamond formation to celebrate after the competition and I and a few others were out on the VASS Pan watching them taxy out for this. There were quite a few USAF ground crew personnel dropping their trousers and mooning them as they went by. We didn't know why and thought it must be an in joke. Anyway they took off did their flyby culminating in a pass over the VASS pan at around 1000 feet. Very nice but a bit disappointing as we had been hoping for an airfield beat up. Heading back across the Pan back towards 4 hangar when out of the sky a bog roll was slowly falling and unfurling, landing on the VASS Pan. They'd put a bog roll on one of the practice bomb carriers and dropped right on the VASS Pan.

An amazing selection Danny, Lossiemouth was in my opinion one of the best bases in the UK for visitors back in the day, you never just knew what was going to turn up!.
Cheers.

What a great series of pictures you put up for us to enjoy. Thank you very much Toom317.
I visited Lossiemouth for the first time when the Buccaneers were back from the first Gulf War.
Your photos really make it clear for me that I should have visited Lossiemouth long before instead of staying always in the more southern parts of the UK.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! Thanks for sharing. Myself and a friend were at Leuchars when we heard that the 23rd A7s were at Lossie - jumped on a train and somehow managed the logistics of getting to Lossie to snap some very grainy pics of the A7s. Lovely days.
And those FIS F4s!!! Only ever saw one, at Bentwaters. I was half way around the perimeter of the base when an F4 broke into the landing circuit - "FIS!", and then started to run back to the church end to get the arrival. I was so exhausted, shaking so much with the exertion of running, that the end-result photos were blurred beyond recognition. The one that got away!
Thanks for sharing - more please!

Great selection of shots and thanks for sharing them with us. Nice to see the A-7s and OV-10s, sadly missed types.
