More Bought Prints – Constellations

Post by eLaReF » Mon Jan 15, 2024 12:24 am

Continuing my scanned prints – Graphic heavy!
The fine vertical scratches on some were from using an HP6520 to feed and scan a pile of prints automatically. They were fed over a strip of glass around 5mm wide. However, a piece of paper dust on the glass from the prints caused the multiple fine scratches seen on some of the scans. Scan it again, you got different scratches, as seen here (It's what I sent to HP)

As the images say on Flickr, I returned 3 printers before giving up!

On with the topic......

Great selection - a very sad time when these beauties were gradually retired. No mistaking where #1 of 48-0612 was taken - RAF Northolt.

There were 29 EC-121R converted from various Navy types. By the time of my visit to MASDC in '74, 3 had been written off. The other 26 were in MASDC but despite a bus trip that allowed us to get off and run around, we never got too near them. Most of the Constellations we saw were in this condition

It was mostly NAVY ones that were still whole

SPLENDIFEROUS!
A superb post of a truly great frame.
I remember how they would glide almost silently along the 'Red One' airway in the 60's and 70's
I love the old pistons so thanks for making an old enthusiast tremendously happy
Best regards, Terry

there's a great Connie-dedicated issue of CLassic Airliner magazine, i used it for reference. well worth a buy if you like the plane.

A friend of mine took them when he visited Amsterdam on his honeymoon, that was in 1963 I think.
Edit: Yes, pretty sure it was 1963. I found out that KLM operated their Connies until 1962, but at that point in time the only things about them that were worth anything were engines and instruments, so they stood like this for a while and a lot of them ended up scrapped.
