USA East Coast - Shannon Airport Museum, Fredericksburg

Post by Sixoneseven » Wed Jul 03, 2024 4:12 pm

On the outskirts of Fredericksburg, south of Washington DC lies Shannon Airport which I discovered whilst en-route from Pax River. It contains a neat little museum with old world US aircraft, most of which I hadn't heard of. I'm guessing most of us in the UK won't be too familiar with them so I've listed what they are :

Spad VII
1927 Standard E1 Trainer
1927 Travel Air 2000
1927 Pitcairn Mailwing PA-5
1936 Vultee V-1AD Special
1938 Bellanca CH-400 Skyrocket
1929 Curtis Robertson Robin J-1D

I'll leave you to match the name to the aeroplane!

A homebuilt looking Pitts like (but not a Pitts) flew in while I was there. Also the Mustang replica (about 2/3rds scale) I was told once flew but it so scared its owner that it's now static. The prop isd foam plastic by the way!

Thanks for sharing these, an interesting and varied selection of shots. That Spad seems familiar, I'm sure there was an article, possibly in Aeroplane Monthly, many, many years ago about that particular machine.

Thanks for posting these, nice collection. I wasn't aware of that museum. I've been quite near there a few times, will drop in next time.

Wow, what a fabulous collection of planes, they're immaculate. Are they airworthy?
Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don't have film.
