Great pictures and background info 3greens. I’ve said this countless times before, but for someone who would have been too young to appreciate it at the time, these pictures are a great way of trying to live vicariously through others’ experiences of Binbrook and the Lightning.

I regularly drive through Binbrook, and it’s hard to imagine RAF activity actually occurred there within my lifetime!
As a Scot, it's maybe about time I re-posted these pics from ANOTHER Lightning base................

Just awesome.. what a line up !! Unfortunately furthest north we ever got on family holidays was to Edinburgh castle :( , would have loved to have visited Leuchars. Thanks for posting great images

I thankfully was on the fence side when both 11 (in March 1972) and 23 Squadrons (October 1975) migrated south to Binbrook, with this one first in in October 1975

Brilliant collection of a fabulous aircraft. The last two photo's are stunning - as good (if not better) as the latest digital images. Thanks for posting.

Thanks 3G , lovely shots . XR753 BP was a bit rare , as her pilot [ with name painted on ] was Chris Berners-Price , hence he was allocated BP .
A really nice quiet guy . Got to fly with with him in '97-'01 on B757s . He got his command on B75s shortly after , but last I heard had been poorly and might have retired early . Did a B734 course and later flew on B744s with Simon Braithwaite , another nice guy who was Binbrook Lightnings at the time .
Similar to PaddyB , 1st airshow was 'Colt '60 watching 74sqn on dad's shouldeers .
Was lucky enough to turn a hobby into a job , flying work for 50 years and now back to a hobby .

Thanks to all for the comments.
Indeed condor my Binbrook visits on operational days are very memorable with nothing too much trouble for the host aircrew .. of all squadrons.

A former Lightning pilot and friend of mine had the code BJ displayed on his jet. This was because his name was John Aldington, or BJ, as he was known.

Indeed freebird, I believe as a Sqd.Ldr he also had the distinction of flying one of the last 3 F.6's at the end of June 1988 down to Cranfield for its' new life !

Yes John did deliver a number of those jets to Cranfield. BJ was also the Lightning display pilot for two seasons.
