Pure Nostalgia - Voodoos @ Ch. Fenton Air Pageant '63
Probably the best contribution rec'd to the forthcoming Ch.Fenton air shows is this pic from an old friend. I mean a flypast by a pair of Voodoos!!!

That is a rare shot! I didn't realize they'd ever appeared at an airshow.

Looking at Scramble show reports for 1960's the F-101 looks to have been a regular at UK USAF shows (Heyford , Bentwaters ,Alconbury)..red leader wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 10:17 amThat is a rare shot! I didn't realize they'd ever appeared at an airshow.

I saw my first Voodoos at the 1965 Leuchars air show, 0-60009 & 0-60027.

Fabulous shot of an incredible aircraft. Yes in the 60s they appeared quite frequently at shows together with a tanker and F-100 / RB-66 I believe. I have a shot of this type of formation from an RAF Ternhill BOB show and I've seen other similar pictures from other At Home Days

They also turned up at Coltishall a well, RF's as well as the fighter-bomber version.

I can remember a flypast at a Biggin Hill BofB show by a quartet of F-101s, not sure what year, possibly 1968.

I can defo remember them turning up at Coltishall’s At Home displays back in the early 60’s
They had a distinctive howl when they deployed the air brakes

F-101As or Cs from the 81st TFW at Bentwaters and Woodbridge judging by the tail markings.
Re: Pure Nostalgia - Voodoos @ Ch. Fenton Air Pageant '63
Yes. You're quite right about the composition of the air refuelling formation. The tanker was a KB-50J. A shot of this will appear in the book from the same contributor. A four ship of F-100s was also on the programme but sadly no photo of them was available. That was the strongest USAF participation at a Ch.Fenton show I know of.binbrook87 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 17, 2023 7:56 pmFabulous shot of an incredible aircraft. Great nostalgia. Sadly another type missed, also being of the same vintage - in my case a slightly late birthday pressie!

Loved the Voodoo - a beautiful looking aircraft and as LimaHotel01 mentioned, they are both from the 81st TFW.. I saw most of the Bent/Wood 81st TFW F-101A/C's and all 36 RF-101C's that the 66th TRW operated from Upper Heyford. A common sight at Battle of Britain shows and USAF open days, on the ground and in the air, they also made many appearances at my `local` base at Greenham Common in its B-47 days. Usually they were from the 81st TFW just making approaches, sometimes in pairs and sometimes singly but every now and then one would land. Certainly a type greatly missed.

Thanks for posting that photo.
F-101C 60029 was at a Lossiemouth air day, 1962 possibly. KB-50J, F-100 and T-33 accompanied it. I was 9!
It was the only 81st TFW one I ever saw.
Heyford ones flew regular approaches to Lossie. Spotter's nightmare trying to get the serials.

Just to do a bit of market research; I'm trying to convince the photographer that there would be sufficient interest in his collection of B&W images from the '50s + '60s to merit producing a book. What do you guys think? How many of you would be interested in it if he decides to pursue this? There's a dozen or so of his pics in the forthcoming Ch.Fenton book which will be available shortly of such subjects as Meteor aerobatic teams, Meteor NF 14s, Javelins, Lightning F.1s and Valiants. He's coming around to the idea. Just needs a bit more confidence that there would be a demand for it.

I think that the idea of spotters producing books like these is absolutely excellent. If we don't nobody else will and a heap of historic pictures will be lost for ever.
Keep it up ladies and gentlemen!
