Coltishall July 1983 with RF4C AL ANG

Post by hvaneupen » Mon Nov 02, 2020 7:04 pm

During the summerholiday of 1983 I spent a few weeks in the UK visiting several airbases. During this period a few deployments were going on with ANG A7's at Wittering and RF4C's of 106TRS Alabama ANG at Coltishall. As there was no internet at the time the information on departuretimes reached us at a very late state and we rescheduled the tour to watch them leave. The morning started with fog but after clearing all 12 left in pairs!

Fabulous stuff. Have to admit I can’t recall the Jags using the eastern taxiway to get to the 04 end very often.

Excellent shots and a great record Harold
Always loved a trip down to Coltishall... as good a place as my home base at Binbrook !
Think it was that deployment that on their initial arrival for the recovery believe two of the aircraft missed Coltishall and landed at Norwich Airport :Wow:
I'm sure Paddy can confirm.
Thank for posting.

thats a negative 3Greens. It was on the deployment - "Coronet Heron" by the 363rdTRW JO and it was 1 A/c in fact I have a somewhat ageing slide of the said A/c on the Norwich flightline - 12.06.1978

RAF Coltishall were recovering on Runway.04 that evening and the Pilot of the said A/c was having prob's and put the jet down thinking he was at Coltishall but found out a few min's after landing he was incorrect

the A/c involved was RF4C - 67-0466 - 62ndTRS 363rdTRW JO rd

I watched that from Coltishall - it was in the 2nd cell of arrivals around 1900L.

I think both Norwich and Coltishall 04/22 runways are almost in line and only a few miles apart. Even so you would think he would have got the right one!

They did when operating from the eastern revetments.

Great memories, Coltishall in the eighties was a spotter paradise, never knew what would turn up but something always did. Thanks for sharing these.
