American Air Days Remembered

Post by F3 » Thu Aug 23, 2018 8:59 pm

At this time of the year, just before August Bank Holiday I always think back longingly to the American Air Days staged at Duxford over an all too brief six year period between 2007 + 2012. They were one of the best kept secrets among the air enthusiast fraternity, especially fir the party piece of the formation flypast by the KC-135 with a quartet of F-15s. There would also be other flybys, usually by F-15s during the day and displays by Duxford residents such as B17 Sally - B and the F-86 Sabre. As the Booster Clubs from all the surrounding USAF bases had stalls there it was also a great shoppertunity. The last one was held in 2012 and for regulars such as myself it is sadly missed.

Yes, missed. I particularly miss the F.86 Sabre, always so ably flown by Mark Linney and Cliff Spink. It is still flying in the States, and is, I think, the world's oldest flying jet aircraft.

This was indeed a great show - managed to get there for 4 of them. Low key affair on a Friday so not too crowded with most of the units from Lakenheath & Mildenhall having a display - from the Hospital / Clinic to Bomb Disposal / Weapons to the Security Police with the working dogs

Always worth waiting until the end to watch the MC-130 and HH-60 depart

As you say a sadly missed show!

Thanks for posting up Michael

Edit - looking back at my photos - managed 5 of them!

I believe it was part of the sequestration back then - no US participation in shows. After then it never came back which is a real shame!

I managed to get to a couple of these and as previously stated, they were great shows, plenty to see and great variety of participants. Thank you for sharing these.

Wow what awesome Aircraft, love the pictures of the KC-135 and F-15 Eagles/ Strike Eagles, would have loved to have made it down for one of these events especially after Air Fetes ended at The Hall.

Were there any ground elements like Mildenhall Air Fetes at all?

Only ground elements were exhibitions of equipment, fire, medical, police etc plus unit souvenir stalls so it was possible to collect stickers/patches/T's of all the Hall + LN units plus offshoots like Molesworth. On one occasion one of the LN units assembled a display of weaponry around the museum's F-15 sited nr the American Museum which was quite interesting. Disappointingly no burger stalls except for the resident ones. Here are a few pics.
