Black and white film must have been considerably cheaper than Kodachrome as there's no way I could have afforded to take all those Lightning shots in my young days!
I'm glad you did though and thank you for sharing such a great array of aircraft.

I obviously never saw the tee-shirt, else I would have bought one!!
Doubt it would fit these days though!
:halo: :halo:

B&W film was less expenive. But they were Lightnings, so hang the expense!

Wonderful, just absolutely wonderful. Well done that man, you have brightened up an otherwise mundane bank holiday!!!!
Its gonna rain, its gonna rain till the levee breaks, a tidal wave of fear and pain washes us away, another fight into the night until nothing else remains, how do we find harbour from the Hurricane?

What a fantastic set of pictures! I agree about Leuchars shows always being grey and dull, not sure I ever had the 'shooting into the sun' problem of which you speak :-)

Excellent Post. Memories of aircraft seen but never captured like yours. I prefer your explanation of the two dubious blokes, anybody in a 'Flasher-Mac' increases my anxiety.
Not sure how, but I ended-up having several of those stickers & the Legendary Tee-shirt...Red lettering on a sky blue shirt...Subtlety-free! Wore it to death.

The stickers were an A4 sheet of sticky labels. I bought a whole sheet, but fortunately scanned one a long time ago, because I kept giving them away!

Absolutely brilliant collection and walk down 'memory lane'. My first memory of an airshow was our family visit to Waddington in 1962, when I had my photo taken by the Stations' hack .. an Anson. Also by the nose of a Bristol Freighter (Canadian AF ?) The Vulcans were in their white anti-flash finish and a highlight was the the non stop flight home from Aden arriving mid afternoon to the applaud of the crowd. I think the Hunter aerobatic team was the 'Blue Diamonds' (19 Sq ?) Short pants, blazer and tie was the order of the day.

Your Lightning line was just incredible. I've enjoyed many a visit on base to my local Binbrook over the years but can't ever remember a line quite like that.
I must also applaud you for the B&W - i persevered loading up my cassettes from a 10m length of FP4 as I was just too keen to get through the K25 and K64.

Thanks again for posting,

My first Leuchars display was also '62, but I had started 4 years earlier with RAF Turnhouse's BoB display in 1958. Along with 000's of others we walked there the 4 miles from the outskirts of Edinburgh.
I used FP4 also, but despite the intent, never got around to rolling my own. But I later took up pistol shooting and doing it there meant I saved 10p a bang on 9mm or .357. Being Scottish, there was no argument with that one.

I've lost it - Someone somewhere responded to my "Leuchars always gloomy unless it was sunny and then you were shooting into it" comment
But from a later show - the sort of picture you got if it was sunny, or even cloudy-bright - Silhouettes!
