A one off mod for extended range tanks I believe, for possible or actual Special Forces use to extend range. Seem to remember that there were possibly several going to be modified but it never happened, not fact but also seem to remember rumours of similar sponsons being built and ready for install.

I was told that the larger sponsons on the Puma were for fuel to give the Helo extended range. And that this was going to happen to the entire Puma fleet, but as mentioned it never happened.
