Woodbridge/Bentwaters F-4's

Post by PaulN » Fri Mar 01, 2019 10:14 am

Hi All

A few F-4D''s taken at Woodbridge and Bentwaters during the 70's Some interesting fits on a couple of these 65-788 recovering with a TDU-10/B target dart under the wing and 65-781 TJ being readied for delivery from the 81st TFW with a definatley non standard fit of 2 SUU-23A gun pods on the inboard pylons , presume they were being ferried down :S a coouple are also in the non standard scheme where the normal FS 30219 tan has be replaced with FS 34201 SAC tan ...well I suppose tan is tan

Cheers

Paul

Super set and very nostalgic. The pic of 788 with the target dart is unusual and it looks as thought it is so big as to hit the ground on landing!

Phantastic post. Some most unusual subjects there esp. those with non-standard camo and with the target dart.

Thanks guys

They had to land pretty flat with the dart on, not a lot of flare

Very rarely used to see anyone round there tough :S Got a bit busier when the A-10s arrived. Remember walking past the church on the fence line and getting soaked dodging watering for the field....still got a Remove Before Flight tag that been blown over the fence too....happy days indeed

Cheers

Paul

Great stuff. What's not to like about USAFE F-4s with white tailcodes!

Yes, many an hour spent near the church. I too have, somewhere, a remove before flight tag from Bentwaters' fenceline, but this one has a chunky 'C' shaped bracket attached to it, finished in red. A trip to the storage shed required....

Great stuff. Any idea where 3 & 4 were taken? The flint building is not one I remember.

Lovely set

Like many I did see most of the WR Phantoms but hardly saw any of them actually moving so it is nice to see them in action

Hi to you again Paul, when I kicked off this Aviation Spotting/Photography lark the 81st were flying F4C's in the Gull Grey/White colour scheme with Buzz numbers on the side, as were the 10thTRW - RF4C's..What a start to the "hobby" - Big Howly Smokin Engines on a Great Aircraft
Sadly there is a BIG Lack of pictures of those days which personally I only have One Colour Print taken at a COLT.BoB day
But I do have B/W print & Slide of the Era pre those Shots that you have posted, and luckily was able to get shots like those which are great memory items
who knows maybe someday in the future I will get round to copying and posting some of my own memories
forewarned is forearmed
