Flyovers - Davis Monthan & Marana Storage

Post by 67ARRS » Tue Nov 16, 2021 6:34 pm

Now that Biden has opened the US I have booked a trip to Arizona for the end of April 2022. Planning on basing in Phoenix but want to do AMARC & Marana. Any suggestion re plane hire companies at either Tucson or Avra Valley.

Double Eagle are good for doing this. They were at Tucson Airport but now relocated to nearby Ryan Field.

A Marana overflight last week enabled 40-odd Silverbell helos to be identified too. Note that the FYs were NOT read off, just added for your convenience.

Tom,
Thanks, nice list. I take it you added in the first two digits of some of the serials to the white last threes, as some of them are wrong:

094 will be 19-21094
051 will be 19-21051
100 will be 19-21100
055 will be 19-21055

96-26701 is a Reserve machine based at Fort Knox. I think this one is 82-23701. It's caused problems before.
Can you reconfirm 85-24407 and 84-23980 please? They are probably right, both would be ex Rucker, like a lot of WAATS machines. Did they have a white last three and/or an Arizona flag?

19-72455 is a Barstow-based machine - visitor, it arrived on 9Mar22 I think. Does it wear the standard (ie non "Aggressor") scheme?
19-72450 is a Fort Polk-based machine, so would be a long way from home. I think it is much more likely to have been Barstow-based 72460, which was also at Pinal in March.

Thanks Andy, some photos sent to you.

I was just posting quickly really to let the OP know what sort of things could be obtained from a flyover.

One other thing worth mentioning is that a weekend overflight will produce slightly less, as the Lakotas are usually hangared then. Still c 30 UH-60s left outside though.

Recent posting on MSF and Touchdown (May 2022) suggests DM overflights are regularly being denied.

The flights over the Boneyard are now restricted to be above 5,600 feet or even higher or they can also be denied. Not good if taking photos :@

I seem to remember flying around 5,000ft back in 2015 and that was ok...depends on the sun too of course.

Quite, also not as good as actually being allowed to walk the lines inside the base, like we used to:)

Was that on the 4 hour tour from Pima or before then?
Did this in 1989 and they used to drop you off by the F4 ramp and allow you to walk up and down.

I can't remember as it was the early eighties, what I can remember is the coach driver opening the doors and saying....'ok you guys do your thing'.

In the 70's they did a tour on the first Saturday of the month which let you loose for a complete day. Did it in October 1976 and we managed to log 4,549
