Wildfires 20 km or so east of the LL canyon. Helo and CL215 ops off the coast. May affect LL ops but hopefully not

Cool

Any Idea what's due - standard NATO stuff I expect but Andravida is a Phantom base so always worth it

Haven’t seen the news today yet but the fire was not under control yesterday. If venturing into the mountains be very observant of your surroundings, weather and winds. These fires can travel 20km in a couple of hours. Check alternate escape routes and have a plan, might sound over exaggerated but believe me it ain’t.

Further to my last post, some locals here in Punda/Pounta (at the top end of the canyon) were saying there was no canyon flying today because of the fire. Whether that is because of potential problems with the effects of the fire and smoke itself, or the helo and CL215 ops taking place around here, Im not sure. Many of you will have seen the helos overflying the top end of the canyon today, and this evening from our clifftop dinner venue, we observed two CL215s making regular scoop runs off the coast at Trepeza until dusk. After scooping the airplanes climb away towards the fires east of here and cross the potential exit route from the top of the canyon at a similar level to the jets as they leave heading north. Whilst I cant find any NOTAMs to verify any restrictions, common sense would suggest the situation has compromised LL ops for the time being on this route.
If you are not attending the spotters day and heading to the LL area, be prepared for another possible blank tomorrow. Hopefully things will improve - especially for the locals who are in the most danger.

Fire appears to be spreading South and West, still not under control by the looks of it

Sounds like something has happened at Andravida - just heard the Spanish, French and Portuguese have diverted.

From reports it sounds like exercise flying is restricted to one mission in the afternoon

Doesn’t surprise me as it’s an 9:30 meet on Spotters day rather than 8ish on the April exercise and the photos I’ve seen from yesterday are all from the “afternoon side”. Great shots though and the grass is cut.

Was going to ask the same - anything on scramble?

With only one mission it won't be easy to see everything

I heard the Greek Rafales and F-16C are operating from Araxos :(

On Scramble

-Seen at Andravida during the short spotterday on 1 October:

-2x Rafale B EC4 (flew)
-2x Rafale B EC30 (flew)
-2x Rafale C EC30 (flew)
-4x JAS39C Hungarian AF (flew, more in shelterarea?)
-4x F-2000A AMI (flew, one each from each Stormo)
-6x F-16C Polish AF (four flew)
-5x F-16AM Portuguese AF (four flew)
-5x EF-2000/ 1x EF2000T Ala 11 Spanish AF (four flew, more in shelterarea?)
-5x JAS39C/1x JAS39D Swedish AF (flew, more in shelterarea?)
-5 x F-35A LN (flew, more in shelterarea?)

No Romanian F-16s, Italian F-35s or US Navy Hornets seen. Greek participants seem to fly from other bases than Andravida. It seems the Phantoms are not participating (five on big ramp; one went out on a testflight, another one flew a normal mission).

Only one wave (13:30-16:30) flown during daylight hours. Second exercise wave is in the dark. Only spot during the spotterday is the position in front of the tower (so sun in your face until 13:00ish). 'Luckily' only the two Phantoms flew in the morning.
The group of roughly 150 spotters and tourists got kicked off the base before 16:00 as an LN F-35 returned with an emergency but landed safely. A half hour before the group was also instructed to keep the cameras down as the Hungarian Gripens taxied past and two Greek Rafales performed an overshoot.....

A single ltalian Eurofighter is due into Andravida this morning, and departing shortly after but no serial given. So could possibly be an aircraft swap.
