Baana 22 highway exercise in Finland.

Hello!

The Air Force Academy will arrange the Baana 22 exercise in Joutsa on 25 to 30 September 2022. The part of highway 4 used as a landing strip will be closed to all traffic during the exercise.

Baana is a road base exercise annually conducted by the Finnish Air Force. The lead responsibility of the exercise rotates every year among the Air Force units, and in 2022, it is the Air Force Academy’s turn. The Air Force trains regularly operations from other than a home base to be capable of a quick dispersal across the country, when necessary. Participation in operations from road bases is a part of Air Force pilot training.

That's awesome, a pretty cool and rare sight to see Hornets use a road as a runway.

On the other hand I'd be using it as an excuse for a day off work, "ahh sorry boss my road is closed and I can't get out the house as the Air Force are using it as a runway"

Excellent shots, when I visited Finland in 1990, I remember driving along a road in the Central part of the country, which was perfectly straight. It widened considerably for about a mile or so, it could have been here, but there are other locations in the country. Nice to see a couple of former Swiss Hawks too. Thanks for sharing these with us.

I've seen pictures of this event before and it fascinates me, do they vary the actual location each year or use the same spot?
I've found the section of road they used this year on Google maps, it looks like it has some specific modifications for this use and the only apparent divert for traffic is quite a long way round - how long do they exercise for? Just a day?
I wondered how easy to access it was, but videos online show quite a number of spectators and it's not that far from the town.
