Moody skies at Lakenheath.

Post by gary1701 » Wed Aug 03, 2022 4:11 pm

Gents,

A few from about a hours quick stop at Lakenheath North side with the aim of hopefully catching a few from this weeks early evening recoveries. The forecast clearing skies didn't quite happen as hoped for and it nearly looked like a complete bust but for the 10 minutes when the light did get through for 4/5 returning F-15s and 2 F-35s. The dark back drops helped as well.

Still don't see any need to replace my 14 year old 100-400 Canon Mk1 for the time being.

The newly marked jet would have looked rather nice under those conditions but I'm not that lucky, so just a few regular Eagles.

'Bolar 1' caught the dark stuff nicely.

Great images sometimes a moody sky makes them look better, when the aircraft get lit up.

Lovely set and as you say, the moody skies add to the interest.

Definitely no need to replace your kit! I have Nikon DSLRs and have no intention of "going mirrorless" whilst there is life in the old dogs!!

Very nice, I do like a nicely lit subject with darker, as you say, moody sky backdrop.

Enjoyed viewing these, thanks for sharing

Gents,

Many thanks and apologises for causing a little confusion over on the days heads-up thread. Not that I get much chance nowadays to try it, but the long summer months which makes that side viable for the light is well worth a try, even just on the locals. I remember the final summer deployment of the old 81st FS A-10s out of Spangdahlem in 2012 from memory. A lot of us got some great shots in the summer evenings from that side.

My old 100-400 dates from 2006, so it's actually older than what I said earlier. It'e been refurbished twice by Canon, when we had a service/repair centre fairly local at Colchester, now sadly closed down. It 's been treated reasonably well, and doesn't get that much use nowadays unfortunately. I've no doubt the Mk2 is superior, having been able to compare shots side by side at Lakenheath with people using it on the same body, and the sharper image is clear to see. Unless it fails completely, I don't see any need to replace it for the time being, especially seeing how much Canon lenses have shot up in price in the last year or so.
